Hello E9 specialists,

What is the best way to remove the large door window glass on the driver's door on the E9 with the least amount of effort?

Remove the door panel and then loosen the 3 metal fittings on the glass. Then pull the window out upwards?

Installation: in reverse order

Does it work without problems or what do you suggest from your experience?
Do I have also to remove the small quarter window?
Or loosen it??

Regards Ulrich

There are actual holes drilled in the glass so all fasteners traversing these have to be removed. It's actually not too bad a job.

From W&N to give you the lay of the land:

Yep… unless you want to pull every part of the trim off the door… and I mean everything.… that’s the way to do it.

In my restoration thread there are a few interesting pics that I made with all the door internal installed, but without the outer door skin on.

This gives you ( literally) insight into the how and where which parts are located.
these are really great pics - i will be using them when i am able to put my doors back together

Here some pics from my door 'gutting' from a few months ago when I fully disassembled the driver door.
I removed the side window before doing anything to the triangle window, so yes, it's possible to keep the triangle window in it's location.

Starting point:

First, remove the internal bracket that limits the upward motion, 2 M6 bolts, and catch the bracket before it falls into the door:

2nd: disassemble front metal bracket with black plastic slider:

3. then remove bolts from bracket on bearing carrier to glass, and slide the bearing carrier down the track:

4. Next, wind window to 'up' position for better access to the center lifting point: the black metal strip with 2 nuts. Block the glass with a foam piece or cloth against hard contact to metal doorframe: (with sooo many loose points, it tends to tilt this way, pressing itself onto the metal - it's just a precaution against breaking the glass, not sure if it is really needed)

5. unbolt the lower, middle metal bracket by loosening the 2 M8 nuts:

6. Remove metal bracket from the 2 bolts, just leave it on the arm at the bottom of the door. The 2 bolts have large flat heads on the other inaccessible side, they are likely 'glued' to the glass by years of grime and the rubber sticking to the glass. you can leave them in:

7. Tilt the window inwards, so it clears the channel of the front triangle window:

8.Then you can rotate the window about 30 degrees forward, and you can pull it out upwards.

Et voila, your window is out: you can see the 2 M8 studs still in place, they are not obstructing the removal.
