I'm a newbie and am trying to absorb as much as possible before eventually pulling the trigger on an E9. Looking for a nice driver. Came across this coupe in MA. Aside from being suspect of rust, these seats look like they are from an earlier coupe or even a Bav. I thought I'd ask some more seasoned E9 owners....on ebay item #220199149443

The seats are factory CS seats. They do appear to be reupholstered in vinyl and IMO, not too well done. All the proper seat contours are lacking.
Take your time in finding the right car and don't get into an impulse buy, gather as much information on the CS as possible and then make an 'educated purchase'. You and your wallet will not be sorry. Good luck.

Hint

Hint: CS is a 2-door, Bav is 4-door. Therefore Bav seat backs do not fold down to allow rear seat access, as do coupe seats.

But now you know what coupe seats are supposed to look like, more or less.

Best advice I could give anyone contemplating a coupe purchase, DON'T buy an eastern or midwestern car. If a little rust shows, there's a lot more underneath. Stock E9 seats are neither easy nor cheap to reupholster properly in correct leather (US cars mostly). Hold out for a car you can examine yourself in person or have an expert inspect for you. Spend what you have to to get a good, minimum rust car that needs little or no work. They are out there, but rarer nd rarer.
