I just purchased and installed a new MVP Fuel Level Sending Unit #62161352617 and now, I'm unable to start my 73 e9 3.0 CS.
My car turns over but no gas getting pumped to the carbs.

My voltmeter reads 12.7 and 2.7 at the sending unit and my fuel pump is engaged and displays 12.4 on my voltmeter.
ALL suggestions are welcome.
Most gracious for this forum.

Keep cranking?

What year and model car? (best to put this in your sig)

If a carbed motor, do you have both an electric pump and the original mechanical pump?

Your hoses are sucking air and not gas. Try replacing the fuel hose at the tank and at the driver side fender to the carbs.

It's a 73 3.0 CS with triple-side draft carbs.

I believe it's the original mechanical pump and I have a electric fuel pump.

My old fuel sender feed gas just fine but the gas gauge stopped, so I purchased the new MVP sender, which doesn't have the old insert and is difficult to remove the old one, so I made the connection as tight as possible but my e9 still not starting.

Thanks

Chris,

Are you referring to the fuel hose in pic 1 below?

My old fuel sender stopped sending the fuel level, so I purchased and installed the new MVP unit and yes, it was not tight without the old yellow rubber insert.

I made it as tight as I could, as I couldn't remove the yellow insert, yet the car just turns over with clearly not receiving any gas.

Thanks for your multiple responses to my recent inquires.

do you have the plastic tube that goes on the outlet pipe of the sender - it make the hose connection there air tight.
No but I tried to remove the old one and without success, I made it as tight as possible but still not engaging the car.

I'll try again tonight to remove and insert the old insert but I'm certain the no start is another issue/connection.

Thanks

You need to back up and get things straightened out.

That pic you titled as "Both fuel pumps" is wrong.

Those are fuel senders that have fuel pickups at the bottom.

Next-

"I believe it's the original mechanical pump and I have a electric fuel pump."

That is hard to fathom.

Show us those two pumps......

Post a picture.

Next- fuel hose is 8 mm. the nipple on the sender is about 6 mm. That's why there is a plastic tube on your old sender and what happened to your new sender? the picture you posted from vender showed that tube on it and now the sender has no tube. You must use the plastic tube to match the nipple size with fuel hose size.

Don has answered your questions. But yes, the fuel hose starts at bottom of frame rail inside driver fender and goes up the AN fitting you show, if it is porous it will pull air and not gas, same with that insert on your new sending unit. I would fix sending unit first.

Correct, my designation of both fuel pumps were both the sending units.

My bad.

Attached is my 2nd in 22 years of my e9 ownership installed fuel pump.

Installed within the last year.

I do see the white tip above but I may have misplaced it. Another garage/car search tomorrow...

I'm unable to remove the old plastic tube adapter, after many attempts.

I try to locate one at an auto store this weekend, as I can't locate such on wallothnesch.com, Maximillian BMW parts or Google searches.

Thanks for your time and inputs.

Also be sure to remove the retaining wire on the side of the sending unit or your gauge will always read empty.
Wow, wish I knew this a long time ago.

I see a thin single wire.

Does it need to simply dangle by itself or does it need to be tied to the bottom of the unit (see attached pic)?

Thanks

I’d leave it alone.

Hal Boyles offered you one- maybe take him up on it?

“Good point. If you don't have one, let me know your address (PM) and I'll send one to you.“

“I try to locate one at an auto store this weekend, as I can't locate such on wallothnesch.com, Maximillian BMW parts or Google searches.”

Electirc pump has me confused, one line in, two out, one in, one out an another line superimposed so it looks like two out ?

The line emerging from the fuel filter is interposed between the spare tire and the car, is the spare compressing the line?

Make sure the tank is vented in some way, try cranking with the gas cap off.

Pull a line after the electric pump and crank the engine, if nothing comes out, it is not your mech pump and you have isolated it to the trunk.

Your old sending unit is missing the cylinder that covers the float, maybe it is in the bottom of your tank?
That was my thought but such should not stop my e9 from starting.
