I know this topic has been beaten to death but I must revive and kill it again so that I don't do something stupid. Note that this is setup will be for street only, nothing crazy and simple solutions preferred.

My goals for the drivetrain swap:
3.5L, B35 or M90 from a running BMW, refresh top end for ~200rwhp
Getrag 265 from a running BMW

The uncertain:
  • Aftermarket ignition? (Pertronix or other)
  • Electronic fuel pump?
  • Rebuild Webers I have on my M30?
  • Aftermarket EFI? (Megasquirt or other)
  • New speedo for > 1982 drive unit?
  • What ratio Diff?
  • Which donor car to buy?

I can figure out most of the above, but with regards to the final question, I'd like to find a single running donor car that can satisfy the motor and trans. It is very important that this be a running donor because I want to know exactly what to expect when it is in my 3.0. Here's what I've gathered from my research, please correct me if I'm wrong:

B35 is from > '88 535, 635 and 735. It runs a 9.0CR and was only mated to a 260, nor does it have a mechanical speedo drive.

'79-81 528i, 633csi, 733i, 635csi Euro are the only models that hosted a 265 with a mechanical speedo drive.
*'79-(early?)'80 635csi Euro had a CR dogleg trans, this would be a bonus ;-)

M90 was found in 78-83 (but not US 83?) 635csi's... guessing euro only.

So by the sound of it, if I can get my hands on a 79-81 635CSI (I am in western US) that would be the perfect donor car, and most everything would carry over to the E9 (a la Carl's swap guide). This would be the only model that would satisfy all requirements. Otherwise I would have to pull the trans separately from a running 528i or something... don't want to deal with that.

Has anyone used the Bosch Jetronic EFI from these early E24's?

Check out the Euro 633 I mentioned in the cars for sale. Might be able to sell off the bumpers for good money. The LSD would be a bonus . (I am just assuming all this fits in an E9)

An E12 535 would also work.

The early Motronic systems are a little finiky, especially when cold. I would argue that switching to a modern FI system (Motronic 1.3, MegaSquirt) would have more of a hp / fuel economy improvement than refreshing the head.

Thanks for the heads up, I inquired but the fella isn't selling it now.

i bought a damaged 1987 E32. for $800 10 :1 cr. kept the power steering pump alt. and air con. then sold the rest to the wreckers for $700
