I'm heading out to the bay area Tuesday morning and I am leaving the following Monday. I would love to hook up with any interested E9ers for coffee and stories.
My son is purchasing a property in Mountain View on Friday and I expect to be helping him with flooring, paint, etc., this weekend. It will be good to take a break from it. I know my way around the valley pretty well so I can connect with you (and any others) pretty much anywhere. Hopefully we can get a small crowd!
Here in Orange County we are having a big bash this Saturday morning starting at 0630 at the weekly gathering of Cars 'n Coffee @ the Ford Automotive Group parking lot at the Spectrum in Irvine---a terrific array of BMW's will be on display (imagine--most are rust-free)--from a pre-war or two models through Z-8's (ten I heard) 10 fine E-9's (including the BLUMAX), TBL, the race Batmobile and my former M-1 and many others selected to display in our special allotted parking at this venue. Of course-weather permitting-there is often a gathering of 350-400 cars each Saturday at this gathering--and often attended by known folks such as Dan Gurney and Reeves Callaway--both pretty well known in automotive circles
This display is followed by a 1 1/2 hour "stroll" through some of our nice backroads--no racing please--and then ending at a lunch served by our Host and long time friend Klaus Kindor who is a key part of the Crevier Classic Car facility in Costa Mesa--located in close proximity to John Wayne airport--the one serving Orange County if not familiar with this area of SoCal. That facility now houses approximately 80 or 90 fine classic cars (and growing) of owners who are also club members--trust when I say--this is an extraordinary facility--all the cars are on display and representative of by-gone days focused on the 1920's to mid-1970's. I have been privilegded to be there several times in the past 3 months since they opened and am impressed with the great decor of the fine cars on display and within the ambiance of a fine mens club, etc.
So John--I'm in need of a "shotgun" for this happening so if you wouldn't mind riding in the highest mileage E-9 on planet earth--fly down Friday afternoon and spend about a day and then back to the Bay area about mid-afternoon on Saturday. Not all of us here on the "Left Coast" are of the fruit and nut types very often characterized as such by those back East--many of us are just fortunate transplants from small towns in the Mid-west.
Let me know if this is feasible.
I'd say 2 PM so JJ has time to do some good work before taking
the break. The places nearby we could gather at are:
- Cafe de la creme - Off Middlefield between Mountain View and Palo
Alto, good coffee and pastries. Bohemian. Good parking lot, tables
next to the cars.
- Peet's Cofee Los Altos - Park on the street.
- Rosatti - Alpine Rd Portola Valley - Mostly beer and fast food, scenic road
and big parking lot.
I think you all should meet up at John's son's house and knock out a few days of work for him. That frees him up to get out and see the west coasters coupes. And our beautful west coast..
John et. al,
Hopefully I can make it as well. I'd like to meet up with ya'll.
John, I live in Mountain View, although I'm pretty busy this weekend digging out from the torrential down pour last weekend, let me know if I can lend a hand for an hour or so or if you need any tools for your work on your son's house. Mountian View's not too big.
It look like it could be a good turn out. I am really looking forward to seeing folks.
For those who don't know, my son actually bought my coupe in the bay area and then he gave it to me. My tag now reads: "THX JIM" Needless to say I feel like the luckiest dad in the world! The house he is buying is just down the road from the coffee shop just south of Castro street. We're planning to scrape the ceiling (popcorn), patch and paint, and if we have any time left rip up carpet and install hardwood flooring and molding. We will probably bring in a new fridge and washer / dryer set.... We have the majority of tools; I plan to buy him a nice chop saw for flooring and modeling today. Anyone interested in getting dirty is certainly welcome.
The help offers are very touching. I have 70ft of fence that collapsed
over the last storm. If you guys want to fix that while I BBQ we can
go into Saturday evening...
