Howdy all,

So I am on a 'quest' to find ANY images of this Grp 2 'factory rally car' driven by Rauno Aaltonen mentioned on this link.

http://www.slowlysideways.com/englisch/members/BMW 2800 CS/BMW 2800_engl.html

"The BMW 2002 was the mainstay of the Munich firms rallying activities but they also tried the 2800 Coupe. This was a car that was very successful in circuit racing but its extra power and road holding could not compensate for its extra size and weight on stages. The factory built two rally cars. One was a sort of Group 1-plus specification driven by Gerd Raschig and Peter Linzen. The second car was prepared to Group 2 with big wheel arches and a 3-litre 295 bhp engine driven by Rauno Aaltonen."

Google image search is limited to a few images of the blue and white Grp 1 car. It looks great all muddy going sideways!

Your mission: should you choose to accept it, is help locate images of this elusive Grp 2 'rally car'. I wonder if it got 're-purposed' into a ETCC road racing car.

This message will self-destruct in ten seconds.......

Everyone back to work now....

Thanks MP. Great pic, I have that one buried in the files too.

That's the 'Grp 1+' car, originally driven by Gerd Raschig and Peter Linzen, still in Germany I believe. Anybody know where it is today? Not sure if the link's info is current.

Any of our European friends have any info on the fate of Rauno Aaltonen's Grp 2 rally car??

Gotta luv them 2-tone coupes!

Shanon, nothing found by me. Surprisingly not mentioned by Jeremy Walton in Unbeatable BMW - focus on their racing revival to 1979, touches on 2002 rallying as part of their progress in motorsport but no mention of the coupe in rallying.

Try searching via Motoring News - UK motorsports weekly that covered rallying heavily in that era. I've had a brief look (a lot of clag presented) but no joy so far and have to time out now until mid next week.

Update to last - doesn't look as if MN has anything on line, to be honest not even sure it's published any more. Sorry, MN looks like a dead end.

There is an organisation Motor Racing Archive who will research ... for a fee! They use MN amongst other sources.

Found it!

Eureka!!
So here it is, where it is today is another question. And yes, it was later raced in the ETCC.

Here' what a new friend In the UK was kind enough to share with me:
-------
I think Aaltonens (rally) car was a Schnitzer car in about 1971 and I do believe it was turned into a Gp2 racer also driven by Aatonen in 72 Gp2 and later sold then raced under different names and different rulesets through late seventies. See Frank de Jongs "touringcarracing" for pics of Aaltonens early Gp2 (ex rally car) about 70-71. Not rally as we know it more like Hill Climb-Enduro series.

Love to find a pic of it hillclimbing back in the day sometime! 8)
