Improving the handling

As a new owner of a ’71 2800CS I am interested in the opportunities that are available for improving the handling. I would be interested in learning more about what should and shouldn’t be done to the suspension. I am not building a track car but would like a sure footed street car. What are recommendations for anti sway bars, lowering springs, shocks, bushings, wheels and tires? Also who are the dealers that carry these products?

Thanks,
Steve

Give Carl Nelson a call (see links section for bimmerdoc.com). He has a suspension setup that I put on mine and it handles great. Includes lowering springs, bilsteins, and sway bars.

psychrunner,

Thanks for the response. I am planning to take my car to Carl shortly for a full inspection, just to see exactly what I bought. I will talk to him then about the suspension.

Did you install the springs yourself, does installation require a spring compressor?

Steve

Those spring compressors can be tricky/fatal. I had a spring shoot out and put a hole in the sheetrock of my garage inches from my noggin. It was the giant lever type that I do not recommend. I would definitely have a pro install the spring and the top strut mount and then its easy to bolt in.

The single most effective handling solution....

Donate your Ferrari to me. I will forever after sit by your side and give you driving tips! (well, maybe that isn't such a great deal.. but I figured it would be worth a try.... ).

Very sweet collection!!

I talked to Carl this afternoon about springs, bushings, sway bars and shocks. Unfortunately the springs are on backorder until later this month. I am going to take my car in for his inspection II (major tune up). I should know a lot more about the car after that.

Thanks for the kind words about my cars. It is a great privilege to be their caretaker for a while. No mater what your are driving, when your tossing it through the twisties that’s when you get that stupid grin. The key is to drive’em.
