Inner front wing/bay covering

I have peeled off a sort of sound deadening ? material from the above area because although it was stuck down water had started to lift it in places. Thankfully I have caught it early so there is no rust underneath but is it really necessary to put this stuff back or just leave painted metal showing which will not be so much of a water trap .

It is certainly a rust prone trap...maybe peel it off but keep it for the next owner if you're concerned??

Whats it's purpose , haven't seen it on 2002s

To add weight! Really, my understanding is that it is for sound dampening. It is not on the CSL's or the race groups...
