I am having my front seats redone and thought some of you might be interested in what a stripped out seat looks like.It turns out there is a small clip that holds the headrest shaft in place and this is what gets rusted preventing easy movement of shafts! No way to access without taking leather cover off seat.Clever engineering. Also interesting that besides clip being rusted so was much of the other metal.Tore apart a Bavaria seat and found the same rust!

Interesting. What is that material making up the curved surface? Fiberglass?

Do you have photos of all the other layers between leather and that hard cover? Is it all "horse hair" or is there foam in between? I'm contemplating foing my own re-stuffing of seats and would like to know what I'm getting into.

Interestingly, a knowledgeable poster on the German CS board has stated that the foam core from the E60 seats will fit the E9 seats. Any thoughts on this?

It's nice to see how the headrest posts fit, mine are frozen like many others. I might try the PB Blaster now, thanks.

Do you have a link to this?

I would love to "upgrade" the front seats in my e9.

Recovering Seats

Whom are you having do the recovering? My front seats (Recaros) are on the to do list (not bad, but in need). I am in Baltimore but grew up in Lancaster so easy drive. Please post after pictures. Is the upholsterer doing it himself or using kit? Thanks.

Thanks!

In all my years on this and Art's list, this is the first time IIRC that anyone has posted a photo of the actual innards of the seat back.

I've had mine hanging from a tree, rope around the headrest, and putting my not inconsiderable weight (plus a BFH) on the headrest in a vain attempt to free it. NO WORKIE.

Please post a description of seat back removal from the seat bottom, and how to remove the seat cover. Is this likely a destructive process? My seatcovers are in substantial need of "some work".
