What is the best way of inserting them, so that they seat properly into the metal frame that is screwed to the back of the wooden instrument panel??

Thank you, BUT

my experience is that the rear ends of the black cylindrical frames won´t seat into the rear mounting plate without some odd work...
When you remove them, which I have done on about a dozen ínstrument boards, they won´t all come off easily. Either they are soldered against the rear metal board, or they are sunk into that rear frame, so that the edge of the frames are level with the rear of the metal board.

I would like to "shoe horn" them back into position, but haven´t learnt the trick...

probably i was the last dumb with good luck, because they came off so easily !, not even a "plop", and they were soldered ! you can tell from the photos
good luck !

On my spare cluster (doesn't everybody have one?) the one conical/cylindrical surround that I removed needed a little coaxing. When it came out it appeared that there head been some light brownish glue between it and the wood. No solder, fortunately.

I just got my dash wood back from Heritage Woodworks and it looks great. However, the black gauge bezels really look dull now compared to the new wood finish. Any recommendations on bringing back the original finish? It's that crinkly black texture. Was it glossy or more of a matte like the wood? Just paint it black?
The wood shop removed the bezels and the metal plate and reconstructed everything after the wood work. Now the bezels are loosely held in place with some double sided thin tape strips. They can be easily removed for refinishing, and (I hope) easily put back in place.
