In addition to all interesting facts, in relation to the production of the CSLs, there are some interesting info about some of the CSL cars. Cld be used in office Christmas Party Quiz.

Here we go:

- In 1973 (I think), there was a Golf CSL driving around in Bonn, Germany with big stickers all over the car saying "F.D.P. Der Liberaler". Surprisingly, that car was driven by a member of the Liberal political Party.

- One RHD CSL was owned by Sean Connery (007°). I think the car was Polaris with vinyl roof. Connery picked-up the car at the BMW dealer in Leeds.

- There still some few one-owner-from-new CSLs. One of these is an early Polaris Bat, owned by a German car-journalist. The car is in daily use and has been driven at least 450 000 km.

- Speaking about Germany, there is one CSL cabriolet living in Germany.

- The RHD CSL is the most common CSL today. Almost 70% of all cars are traced.

- Only one LHD CSL (injection and non-Bat) was delivered in the color "Baikal". The car was owned by the actor Malcolm McDowell.

- Several countries only got one single CSL delivered

- Former football star Ulli Hoeness (Bayern München) drove a "BMW-individual" late series Bat, which was factory-designed for him (special painting, stripes and rims etc)

- First ever built RHD CSL lives in Australia

- Last ever CSL Bat lives in Germany

- Several factory drivers were driving street CSL Bats as company cars (e.g. H-J Stuck, Ronnie Peterson and Derk Bell)

Off topic: there is a E28 M5 Leichtbau in Sweden (M5 CSL) - very nice car.

Cheers

Henric,

Did BMW keep records of how many CSLs were made in each color? I don't think they can provide that info on the CS and CSi. Thanks.

Chris,

As regards CSL, there are records of the color and country distribution. For CS/CSi, BMW knows for sure what original color each individual car had. The owner can request such info via BMW.

Chris,

I think they can - at least for the special low production series - as the CSL. Normally, BMW only gives this info to motor journalists and researchers etc.

For the more modern classic cars (youngtimers) like the 850CSi, one cld get info like color and factory options (BMW-individual) etc.

It says the car was manufactured in 1971 (typo?). RHD CSLs were only built between 9/72 and 1/73. FYI, this car was previously equipped with an electric mirror on the driver's side + wind splits.

"fdp" csl

Hi
Maybe the FDP CSL is mine. The car was in the 1973- 1979 near Bonn. The first owner was an FDP member (Thanks Google :) ) The doors, the spoiler had all the colours from the german flag, on the hood was some rest of old stickers.
cheers..

The Hong Kong Golf CSL, with the extra lights, has actually a very late and correct RHD CSL VIN - interesting car!

merlin32,

I will dig-up the photo of the FDP CSL, but from my memory, the Bonn-photo must have been taken sometimes in October/November 1972.

I think your Golf car was manufactured sometimes during the spring 1973. I know another Golf CSL sold by BMW Niederlassung in Bonn. That car is from October 1972.

As far as I remember, the FDP CSL was a non-citypack car.

merlin,

I've found the photo of the FDP CSL. It was published in BMW Journal in May 1976. Therefore, your car cld still be that one. From the picture, one cld see the following very big stickers:

Hood: "F.D.P Die Liberalen"
Along left side: "Ein Liberaler"
Trunk: "F.D.P."

There is no "German flag" on the driver's door. On the front spoiler, there is a "frame-striping" surrounding the entire spoiler. It's not really visible from the picture, but there might be some extra head lights in the front.

The car looks like Golf and has no steel bumpers. But there is the CSL GFK rear bumper and race-locks on the hood. The car was equipped with black "CSL-stripes".

Cheers
