Does anyone know if a 74 with a exterior Polaris Silver ever came with a Black interior or was it always Blue?

I do not know the exact count but seeing many "natural" Polaris coupes I think it is about 75% black interiors and 25% blue interiors.

Anyone have a better handle on the real numbers and actual build combos?

There are many Polaris coupes that did not start life Polaris so it makes it tough to come to an accurate percentage.

Interior Colors for Polaris

I always assumed Blue was the default factory colour for Polaris 3.0 CS! I didn't know Black was also an option.

Did our cars ever come with real leather?

I've seen some Polaris cars with red interiors. What other interior colours have you guys seen?

Believe it's the other way around with the majority of the coupes fitted with blue leather interiors. JMO, not too big of a fan of the obligatory blue interior...kind of bland to my taste. Given the choice of either black or blue, would go with the black interior . Surprisingly, not too many Polaris coupes were originally outfitted with red interiors, most were factory installed on Chamoix E9's along with a limited number of shwarz coupes.

I honestly can't stand the blue and BOTH my 02 and CS have the same blue! It doesn't help that the carpet is blue too.

Thanks for the info on the black interior. This may be a future project. I don't have it in me to go with a red interior! :)

Just curious, has anyone seen a dark brown interior like the Terra or Saddle browns in the current BMW's?

Do we have an interiors gallery? If not, we should!

Yes. I have seen (in person) blue, black, light tan, red, and dark brown interiors. You can see all the interior colors by looking at the parts list:

Exterior / interior color combinations

The German BMW Coupe Club has the factory color charts on their website: http://www.bmw-coupeclub.de/coupe.htm

In the left column, you need to click on "Prospekte/Infos" and then on "Prospekte Farben und Preise". I have grabbed two images which are from the August 1974 factory leaflet and show the colors offered. There are also leaflets available from earlier model years.

If I understand the chart correctly, BMW were proposing to combine the Polaris exterior color with the blue cloth interior. I assume, however, that you could also get other combinations if you specifically requested them.

Note that:

Hoffman Motors--the exclusive North American Importer/Distributor for all BMW's until the creation of BMW North America--specified that, with rare exception--all E-9's for US sale and delivery would be fitted with leather interiors. In my years of ownership--now spanning 40 years--going back to when these cars were new--I do not recall having seen a new E-9 that was US delivered having other than leather seating surfaces. The most common were black, blue and tan Pigskin that proved to be the least durable of the choices available being subject to the effect of exposure to sunlight and the ignorance of owners as to proper care and feeding of same--especially regarding pigskin. Black and blue leather proved much more durable and resistant to detioration.

Most Euro spec cars however that were subsequently and always privately imported were fitted with either, cloth, velour or vinyl interior seating surfaces. leather was a costly option that was not very popular with European buyers--but a feature that Hoffman felt was necessary for a premium car to be accepted US buyers. I think he was correct in his belief.
