I know it's a bit of a way off but I would appreciate you inputs
The bucket has "marine" blue cloth seats and door trims. No carpet worth speaking of.
She who must be obeyed would like the car painted in the dark metallic blue (Like Sav's 73 CS in photo gallery)

Now my front seats need recovering, the material has gone, but the back seats are good, the front seat backs are good, head rests good, and the door /side trim panels are pretty good

However I was wondering if we would end up with blue overload!

The tan/biscuit looks nice to me, the other thought was black, too hot, too gloomy?

Any comments?

I have the same problem, Malc, I'm restoring a '74 CSI in 'nachtblau', or
'midnightblue' (I think it is in English). The carpet, seats and the door trims I have are blue too. Perhaps it's all bit too much blue, but I think about covering the seats with leather instead of the marine blue cloth,
because the leather looks softer and can be a bit darker.
The tan look is very nice under the midnightblue, but I have the blue carpet which is very good and the door trims are blue too and in very good condition
So in the end it will be blue, blue and blue
PS It was my wife too who wanted in painted in darkblue, and I must say it is very nice

Good luck

Malc,

Even though I eventually ended up buying a Fjord/Tan CS, my absolute favorite color combo is either Nachtblau or Baikal w/ white. It may be crazy to even contemplate a white interior, given the potential maintenance issues, but after seeing a blue/white CS a few years ago in person, I was sold.

I would think hard about a blue/blue or blue/black; IMO these cars need a bit of exterior/interior contrast.

Upholstery colour

I'd go for a light tan interior colour to go with the dark blue exterior. Are you gonna stick with cloth trim, or go for leather?

My CSi was Granatrot ( Garnet Red ) outside, cream cloth inside. Cloth was shot, so I had seats, door cards, even rear shelf done in grey leather.

We have discussed this before Malc - I can try and track down the guy who did mine 15 years ago and see if he would be willing to do the needful. Perhaps long enough has passed for him to forget how much work went into them! :D

I agree these cars need a bit of exterior/interior contrast and would opt for tan/biscuit if my paint were Nachtblau.

The blue/blue or blue/black combo IMO is somewhat somber and almost severe.

I also agree w/ everyone who has a dark exterior E9. Mine is also night blue metallic, and is from Italy (1972 csi) and has the two tone cloth/
velour grey inside which is shot. The door panels are black and OK, but
my thinking is to re-do the entire inside inc.carpets, seats, parcelshelf, etc in tan. I used to have an old Mercedes 240D which I bought new in l980 and it came with MB tex in tan, and in the 20 yrs that I had the car, the seats and door panels still looked great, although the pads failed.
I also stayed w/the chrome fender and hood pieces again for the contrast.
Anyone know what to use under the carpets? Mine looks like some kind of rubber material that is cracked in a million pieces!

Hi Malc,

I decided to go with black leather in mine, I know its hard to choose really as its more of a personal taste thing. If you look at my website they are some pics.

Cheers

Malc,
I have always prefered a light colored interior mostly because you can really see the the detail in the trim. I have a nacthblau with tan leather coupe and I just love how it looks. When I had the interior redone I replaced the brown/tan carpets with a two tone tan which made a huge improvement IMHO. Check my web site for this combination to throw into the mix for you decision.

Hey Malc,

At least the Misses didn't want a Brown exterior color, the lady has class. Dark blue is very nice, sensual, classy and it looks very good on our coupes. Now if it were me, I'd go with a nice saddle brown interior. Forget the biscut, too light for our cars. Just my opinion.

Take care and call me, when you make it on this side of the world.

This is a very personal issue, and we live in a mostly free world, but I personally find light interiors with dark exteriors to suit my taste. My Midnight blue met. exterior CSi (from Italy) has grey seats, with black sides and rears, plus black door panels. I found new, black door panels from W&N 2 years ago, but would have bought grey ones if they had been available.

My Jaguar 420G is dark blue with completely grey interior, and my Granatrot met. CSi has a completely grey interior, in velour, which I like even more that leather. It is cooler in summer and warmer in winter (when one no longer drives these cars). I found a good upholstery shop in Stockholm, Sweden which cleaned the grey door panels and mounted them to new cardboard back. This was tricky as the old coverings were heat pressed in the horizontal "seams" onto the cardboard panels.

The nicest interior of all cars on the forum, has to be Kurt´s tan with non-standard Mercedes?? hazelnut carpet. The rest of the car is just as good, but this is an interior related topic. Well done Kurt!

Carpet considerations

Malc, tan/brown seats are good choice for a dark exterior, but you might want to put some thought into what carpet goes with it. BMW supplied carpets that are best described as Harvest Gold, that weird not-quite brown, not-quite gold that was the 1970's appliance alternative choice to Avocado. I lived with the Baikal/tan coupe pictured below for a few years, and while I really enjoyed the color combination, the carpet color really got on my nerves. Ignore the beige floor mats -- they were there to preserve what little was left of the carpet.

Suggestions? I would just go darker, I suppose, with either a sienna brown or maybe warm dark grey. Ask the boss what she thinks .

To Color, or Colour

You could use light grey for the carpets and stick with the blue seats. One step further, have the cushions both front and back done in blue with grey inserts and leave the seat backs as they are.

Malc,

My vote is for something along a lite beer color. Not sure that an amber would work, maybe, but I know a beer color of the lite persuasion would look mouth watering. A dark beer may also work, and you could accent wood trim in a nice frothy head color to keep the mood!

Just a thought...

I have the same dilemma with my Fjord Blue car. I came across this picture recently of a grey leather interior and can't decide between this and Tan. I think the grey would perhaps go better with Fjord than Tan. But it would also suit darker blues. Decisions Decisions!

Malc,

I also repainted my baikal 72 csi to its original colour, and redone the interior in the closest to original tan/cappuccino/light brown leather.
I think it looks really great.

MichaelP,

I orderd a set of 422 carpet ,which I think matches the baikal/tan combo best. Here is a link you might want to order a set too: http://www.cabrio.de/Englisch/navi.htm

It says original Mercedes two-tone loop, but It really looks like BMW used the same.Or?
I can send pics(since don't know how to post pics) of the leather and the carpet.

I have seen Kurt D's car and the tan with nightblue is spectacular!
It doesn't hurt that his car looks like it rolled off the showroom floor.....
