Found a Getrag 260 for $50. I know the seller and it's is in fine shape and functional, but is it worth buying for $50 to use it in my coupe? I'm aware that the speedo won't hook up directly, but $50 seems like a decent deal.

Maybe the question should be asked - “what is the reduced value of a coupe with a non-functional speedo ?”

seems to me that somebody herein converted to and electronic pulse drive for the speedo. i think this is used by the e30 m3 ...

The e30 m3 uses a 265 getrag. The bell housing is different but it’s the same tranny.

got it, but it does NOT have a speedo drive on the 265. there is no speedo drive cable on that car

Others here have used it and if you have the skills it can work, but it is isn’t a great solution in my opinion.

Correct- no speedo cable, no gears installed. There’s a small cap that is placed into the speedo drive opening. Once removed a speedo gear can be inserted and a round gear installed behind the output flange. Same as one year only 1985 (up to 9/85) 5 speeds in 5,6,7 series.

I know it's a vague question, but I don't know enough about the transmissions yet to be more specific. I can design the mechatronics and software to interface, but I guess why go through the trouble if the 260 is junk. Perhaps, to better phrase the question: "is the Getrag 260 junk?".

This could maybe help to get the speedometer working with a G260.
It relies on GPS, which I'd rather not use. Reading the Hall effect sensor seems to be a better approach. But apart from the speed sensor, if the mechanicals in the 260 are reasonably good and if the main dislike is only hooking up the speedometer, then I guess it boils down to cost and time. The 265 is a lot more expensive than the 260 and the 265 is harder to find. The 260 is cheap but I'd have to design and test a device to hookup the speedometer, which will take time. o_O time is what I have more of right now, but if a great deal on a 265 comes along then that's what I'll get. Thanks for the feedback.

On a bit of a side note, can a 6 speed from a 2008 Z4 (N52engine) bolt directly to the M30? I assume not, but figured I'd ask.

I had that particular GPS speedo in an MGBGT with Camaro 3.4L V6 and Tremec 5-speed, eventually got it to work but it was always fiddly and vague, would not do it again.

A $50 tranny with a $300 speedo adapter?
I have a GPS digital speedo in my Bav and it works very well. speedo1.JPG

Or live with no speedo and just rest your iphone on the dash shelf with a free speedo app.
I do that in my Alfa Jr Z because the speedo is in km and off by ten percent. I can't do all that math when I am driving!

I got most of my trannys from the car’s sitting in the yards back in the day also, but that day is long gone now. When a car hits the dirt now at the yard, the tranny is stripped out by the prep guys. They know they will get 200 bucks easy out in the parking lot.
the good news is that they weren’t crushed- they are on racks waiting for an install.
