Is this block M90 engine I've taken it out of a 735I from 82, but I thought the M90 block was only with the old distributor, it is really? But there is a clear L on Block

The other side should also have a "3.5" stamped on it, as I recall. Alternatively, you could do the "low tech" test by removing 1 cylinder's valve springs and rocker, then find the displaced fluid. You would need to be extremely accurate, however.

There should also be a VIN stamped on the starter joint on the block. Plugging that VIN into a decoder should tell you what the source car is.

Assuming a RIGHT hand drive car....

Because there is NOT a raised water jacket on the side of the block on the passenger side extending from the front to the rear of the block with the freeze plugs in it, directly above the oil filter housing- This is NOT an original M90 block-

However....

BMW did manage to produce factory motors with NO water jacket with 93.4 bores and 84 mm stroke in 1981 and 1982 that were still ljet.

After march 1982 the stroke went to 86mm and bore to 92 mm [the so called 10:1 dirty motor.]

Check for the date of manufacture in between 3 and 4 on the exhaust side- you will see date and year stamped there.

Of course- you can always drop the oil pan and mike the bore!!!

ok it makes me a little confused when I spoke with an old bmw mechanic he told me if there is an L at block so they had to be an M90 engine! and then there are some who say if it has a 535 E12 engine with old distributor so it is an M90 engine! Is there any way you can see the number that is was stamped on Block! (The car is not right-hand German car).
but it is exciting but learn a little all the time:-D:-D

any foto of m90 engine

In Europe the early DME (Motronic 1.0) was used on the M90 engine between 09/1980 and 1982.

You find this M90/DME I setup on the following cars:

euro 635csi manufactured between 09/1980 and 04/1982,
euro 735i manufactured between 09/1980 and 08/1982.

It's the number who are at block if it can help solve the mystery:-D:-D

Well, your third photo shows an e23 VIN, 8030880. RealOEM says the following regarding that VIN:

01/1982 E23 735i Sedan M30 Europe Left hand drive Automatic

Hope this helps.
