Italian 3.0 delivery candidate?

I wondered if anyone here might verify this vehicle's Italian delivery by the color of the directional signals...? VIN: 2211533 is there a decoder here that might provide any specific info. on this example? Listed as a '72 Euro.

Believe this example also to be a repaint of different color and wondered how that affects the price I might be expected to pay or receive in a resale later on?

Much to my chagrin, repainting a coupe in a different color is viewed as a cardinal sin in the vintage BMW world. It depends on how much of a purist you consider yourself. I'd be more concerned about the quality of the repaint (not the color) with regard to current/future value.

My guess is that the artist owner of this car felt that a black exterior worked better than burgundy (Malaga, I assume) with that very cool (IMO) interior.

I don't know about the pinstripe interior...:sad:
 
It appears that the interior is original and it DOES look like a somewhat tatty seventies Italian suit of that same era! (IMHO pretty cool)

What I am looking for is a good base car for a complete rebuild but without the usual hunt for interior bits later...I stated elsewhere this board that I have ceased to be concerned with my prior passion (which for 30 years has been not to sin) and but to keep to the 'original creed' alas no longer am I going to buy into the 'the lashings will continue until morale improves' hypothesis any longer regarding my funds available and the BMW classic resale market. (but that's just me)

In this case the car I build needs to last me until they bury me in it... Hence, black does seem the most appropriate color...

..and I sorta like it more and more on these cars as time goes by.

The issue with this car is that it was imported from Italy to CA, (where is ought to have stayed) then bought by a fellow from PA in '85 and then driven and apparently not stored too well as this new spray job he did does not extend beyond the work on the body panels. I hope the underside survived a bit better but I am in doubt.

As it was, the original owner (artist) that changed the color (Malaga is correct, but not my cuppa) and there's nothing to be done now but the originality and condition of the other bits comes into play.

It's the right year, it's Euro and it's got potential...but then again so does my 12v battery out in my e24 ! And it's got NO sunroof!

The lack of sun roof may mean less rust in the rockers (and any other location the roof drains filled with water).

Just wanted to amend my first post; I meant to type that repainting a coupe in a different color is NOT viewed as a cardinal sin...

Personally, I feel that a tan interior works better with Malaga, so I can see why the previous owner went with black on black.
 
The placement of the antenna is a good sign of it being delivered new in Italy.
Velour was much more common than leather in Italy, as was the lack of a sunroof (i.e. few cars sold new in Italy had sunroofs).
Rear bumper with original licence plate lights, is Euro, with added US licence plate lighs when the car was imported to the US.
The Italian front blinkers often had the forwardmost 1/3 in clear glass and rest in orange.
US side markers added upon importation.
Black is/was a very rare colour on the E9.
 
How come the velour is in that pinstripe pattern? Did BMW do "exclusive" or custom work back then? Doesn't it seem odd?

Wouldn't you need both front and rear markers to meet the import requirements back in the day? Has this coupe been hit hard in the front, or maybe the rear?

The black on black looks great. Love the seats but I'll pass on the wheels.

Don't care for the steering MOMO wheel or the road wheels either, look forward to seeing both on egag if I buy this vehicle.

The striped mohair interior fabric is original according to the current owner who bought it from the person who imported it into the USA.

I wasn't sure about the markers either but it is a euro delivery car (italy) so the US DOT standards would not apply there originally. It may be that the addition of the front side markers was all that was required in 85? and that's why the rears are missing although I do know that the car was painted once in Italy and once again in PA (recent) where it now sits.

Both re-sprays were the black but engine photos are not available yet so the engine bay color should tell us a lot. It could also be that during the second paint job the rears were eliminated (once again?) It is odd and subject for discussions with the current owner, when I do speak with him.

This car would make an ideal candidate for my engine transplant project S38B35 and if I decide to forgo my desire for a sunroof car and buy it from the seller that would begin the project...but only if the price becomes more reasonable as time goes on.(ie under $15,000)

You are soooo right...my e24 here has a sunroof that makes the car especially inviting to drive up here in the mountains where the air is clean and balmy this summer. I can understand that the rust issues are begun by clogged sunroof drains and every roof car that i've looked at seems to have had severe rust issues in the past but as you say...keep lookin'

This past summer I narrowed my choices to 4 e9s. This was one of them. A neighbor (& fellow e9 owner) of mine had seen it at a show & recommended that I should see it. I don't think these cars look good in black, but since it was a 30 min ride, I decided to take a look. With those wheels & fender trims, it looked pimped out. The car is in good shape from what I could tell. Looked pretty dry to me underneath. I liked the fabric seats. Did not like the steering wheel, too chunky & too small for me. It drove ok. I'm doing this from memory, but I think I saw a little delamination on the windshield & a little burbling along the top of the driver's door near the vent window. I think he originally was asking $28K. At the time the seller was planning to move & would not be able to take the car.A few weeks later I ended up buying a '73 with 135k mi. I don't see this going for $15k, otherwise I would buy it & flip it.

You're memory is sharp...and I agree fully with your burbling assessment, this photo the passenger door doing same... I appreciate your comment. Please let me know if you intend to contact Allen as he and I are speaking direct this evening. If the car hasn't sold in a year why would you take this on to flip it?

I don't know when the owner first put the car up for sale. I had been perusing various sites for an e9 for 2 years & never saw it posted. I only learned about it in July '09. Even tho it's been modified a bit, I think it's worth at least in the low $20s. But, to be sure, I would have it checked out. The local expert is less than 15 minutes away if you wanted a ppi.
