I have seen schematics/photos of a jack hold-down bracket but my car 74 US CS does not have such a bracket. It does have a bracket on the LHS near the fender for the tyre iron. I can lay the jack in that same location and it seems to fit there. What am I missing?

If your 1974 is a face lift version that has the trunk reinforcements your Jack would be placed between the inner fender and the reinforcement.
Ive borrowed the pic from Alan’s restoration page to show the placement for FL cars

A couple photos of a 1974. The triangular wheel chock goes in first forward of the Jack

Thanks, that makes sense and yes my car has the trunk reinforcements. So it just lays in that position, not bolted down? I don't see how the tiedown for the tyre iron would work as a jack hold-down.

Square-ish metal plate goes over the jack and the hold-down bolt.

I do appreciate the effort. However, strange, my "squarish" metal plate doesn't look like that at all, and it won't hold the jack just the tyre iron. Maybe I have some sort of transition car, or the plate was lost and replaced with the earlier type ...

The square tail 2002s use the same method but the hold down bracket looks like the normal tire bracket, it works as well. I’ve not seen Eric’s bracket but it looks correct as well.
