I thought I'd document the updates we are making to the CSL this winter. I took the car over to GMT in Bend last Thursday and left it with Tim and his crew. We are planning the following updates/mods before the new season begins:

1) Instal a quick disconnect for the steering wheel.
2) Change the diff ratio to a 4.45.
3) Install some mufflers for tracks with sound limits.
4) Some suspension tweaks- 1-2 degrees more camber in the front end,
widen the rear track, etc.

Here is the car arriving at Tim's shop:

They got right on the work, and by 10 AM they had the disconnect installed on the steering shaft:

Next, the diff came out:

Everything looked fine, so the new ring and pinion were installed and the updated diff was back in the car by the afternoon:

It should make quite a difference in acceleration off of the corners. I will also have all 5 gears useable at places like Laguna, Sonoma, and PIR.

Is a Halibrand possible or would that kick you out of class? Always eager to see your updates on the 700....

Pamp,

We are supposed to be "period correct," which is defined differently by the various sanctioning groups. For some my car would not be acceptable because I have Tilton pedals in it, for example. Others allow greater flexibility. My guess is, though, that a Halibrand diff would get scowls from them all.

The 700 is coming along, and I will post an update soon. Thanks for your interest.

Quick Update

CSL updates are progressing slowly.

In an attempt to get a few more degrees of camber in the front we had a local machinist make these new mounts to go in the strut towers. They should give us an additional 2 degrees.

The car is now at the exhaust shop getting mufflers fitted. Portland has noise limits, and so we are forced to quiet her down a bit. They will be easily removed so when we run at tracks without noise limits she will be able to sing in full voice.

Test Report

We made it out to ORP last Thursday for a shake-down prior to Sonoma. The major changes we made were to the suspension and the diff.

Tim was able to get both front and rear to 2 deg. camber. What a difference! Tire temps were nearly perfect across the face of both front and rear tires. Turn-in is crisp with no initial understeer. Add power and the car sticks and goes. Very predictable, and consistent through all our runs.

The new 4.45 diff makes the car jump off the corners. I was just shifting into 5th at the end of the straight, which is not long at ORP, so it should be just right for Laguna, Portland, and Sonoma.

We did have one small engine issue. The engine was loading up coming off the corners, especially left hand corners. We suspect a float level issue. Tim will be checking that this week. The O2 meter we had on it showed we were running just a little rich, but since ORP is at about 2500 ft. we decided to leave the jetting alone. When we get down to Sonoma, Laguna, or Portland, which are all near sea level, the mixture should be spot on.

Over-all the changes we have made have really helped the car. It handled pretty well before, but now it is outstanding. The extra Oomph off the corners is very welcome.

Next stop Sonoma!

BTW, I re-edited the video from last years Monterey race and uploaded it in HD:

I'd be interested in what you use for camber adjustment, do you have camber plates on the front? Any adjustment on the rear such as the eccentrics on the cross member?

It sounds as though you are running quite alot of negative camber at the front?

Headed down to Sonoma Tuesday morning. We will be pitting with Henry Schmidt's #58 IMSA car. These will be the only CSL's running this weekend.

Stop by if you are at the races! I'd love to meet some fellow e9coup.comers.
