If you had to choose a BMW between the years of 2010 and 2014 and it had to be a 4-door and it had to be reliable which model/options would you look for and what would be acceptable mileage?

Hi Pandora- looks like you need some air!

2010 last year of the E83 X3 great all around BMW. The 2011-2014 F25 X3 try to get the six cylinder.

We have a 2007 E83 X3 six speed manual which is my winter car and a 2014 F25 2.8 4cyl twin turbo Dinan X3 which is my wife's daily.

Prices range from $11K+ for the E83 to up 100K miles. Up to $35K for the F25 with under 75K miles.

Reliable? I'd go slightly out of your age range and get an E46.

I'm with RMP , I researched and bought a 335xi coupe but drove the 4 door as well. Went 2011 to avoid the problems with the fuel pump and transmission issue of the 2007-2010's. Dangerously quick with twin turbo and 300hp. I looked at the 328x and it was just too slow/toyota-like for me. Whatever you choose, do a search on model-recalls, run the thing thru the BMW VIN site.

Hi Peter,

Don't know if you guys can buy them but I wouldn't hesitate and go for F10/F11 535d.

Make sure to go for rear wheel drive not xdrive, normal M suspension not the electronic stuff, automatic gear box, head up display, adaptive cruise control & comfort seats. You'll need a very good M5 driver to shake you off.

I'd choose a 2012 328 Touring wagon with a manual and sport pack. I looked and looked for a low mileage one for reasonable money. Last 3 series with hydraulic steering. Rented a diesel version of the 3 series that replaced it and would not get that.

I had a drive in a 235 M recently (Ok not a 4 door) and absolutely loved it. One of the best cars I have driven.

For the last 25 years I've always driven five series. E24's, e34's, e39's, and most recently an e60. The E34 was the last good one, and since then they've been horribly unreliable. I've only been stranded once, but the rate at which parts worn out or failed was astounding. My E60 cost nearly $7k in repairs (not maint) in the four years it spent going from 50k to 100k miles. In comparison, my wife has always had Merc ML's and they have been almost completely reliable. I think we spent less than $2k on repairs for her W164 over 8 years and 145k miles. Her W163 was similarly good, and I believe her W166 will also be head and shoulders more reliable than any BMW five or X5.

That said, the 3-series are generally far far better than the 5-series's.

My buddy bought a used V8 M3 a few years ago, and it has been trouble free. The only hesitation I have with the one you are looking at is the DCT tranny. If it breaks, you are stuck with replacing the entire unit at the dealer for ? 10k, 20k? That would be painful.
