Just painted my first car... my 1972 3.0cs

That looks beautiful. Can you post more photos and elaborate what the process was? Done in a booth, home shop? What paint system did you use? How much rust removal or body work was involved? How long it took you? I bet you can't stop looking at it.

Great job Scott.
Similar color to my coupe.
What a sense of accomplishment.
I've always wanted to do that.

Yes, I do find myself sitting in the garage late at night staring at the thing. I've owned some interesting cars over the years, but this is the most time I've wasted looking at one of them. :)

When I purchased the car, it had a rusted through passenger-side outer rocker and rocker cover, and the drain channels on either side of the engine compartment were also rusted through in places. I purchased a replacement outer rocker panel and rocker cover from Jaymic. A friend welded in the outer rocker (did an excellent job), and also fabricated new drain channels and welded them in. Unfortunately, the heat from welding in the channels was a bit much for the thinner fender metal, so there is some warpage on the fender tops. I filled them a bit, but they aren't perfect. In the distant future, the car could probably use some new fenders... but I didn't have thousands to spend on a real restoration.

After getting the drain channels in, I fabricated some of the sheet metal bits that seal the channels to the engine compartment and sealed everything up with seam sealer. at least for now, water that ends up in the channels won't end up inside the fender, as was the case when I purchased the car.

After cutting out the passenger outer rocker, I was able to get in and protect the inner rocker with a nice coat of POR15. Hopefully that will slow down the inevitable.

With all of the rust repair done that I was able, I had the car media blasted and epoxy-primed. Body work is also new to me (I've done the mechanical stuff forever... but nothing cosmetic), so doing that was certainly a learning experience.

The paint is an inexpensive acrylic enamel. I shot it in the garage after a whole bunch of Internet research on car painting. (I actually shot some furniture with Rustoleum first for practice). My wife was outside mixing paint for me as I was painting the car. The color is called "Midnight Blue," which I thought would be a good fit for a car that was originally NachtBlau. NachtBlau is a little darker and has a little more red in it than the new color, but I think I actually like this color better. In retrospect, I wish I had taken a bit more time with bodywork. Imperfections show though more than I thought they would. On the other hand... I may be the worst critic, as everyone who sees the car is pretty impressed with it so far.

There is a big car cruise / parade on Fulton Avenue on August 4th, and I plan to have that be its official maiden voyage. I know some of you are local, so you should come on out.

Nice
I really like the style 61s with the dark blue. What size and brand tire did you put on the front and did you have to use a spacer?

I put these same wheels on a Polaris colored CS, 205/55r16 Goodyear GTs, and they rubbed just a hair on the inner shock tower, but they looked great.

205/55/16 on the front and 225/50/16 on the rear. The front tires -almost- touch the shock towers, but not quite. Going over a nasty bump can result in the front tire rubbing the fender a bit. No spacers.

I think I got the idea of using these wheels from your post on this forum and the picture you posted along with it. I love them against the dark color of my car.

Superb!

Mine is where yours was a few weeks ago and I’m planning on the exact same color. Can you tell me what kind and color code paint you used and what you used as an etcher and primer. I have some minor wrinkles in some of the sheet metal around the radiator support so I need to have that fixed before I can put in the radiator and start her up, plus I moved my shop so I'm a little behind schedule. Thanks for the pics- I'll include a couple and hopefully within a couple of weeks I can share pictures of our "twins".

Yours looks great!

Hello Peter,

The color I chose is Midnight Blue from paintforcars.com. It is very inexpensive paint. I used their Acrylic Enamel. If you go that route... you just need to watch out for your paint/reducer/hardener mix ratio. Their instructions say to go with 8:2:1, but I found that 8:8:1 works much better. After some web searching, it seems that many others have discovered the same thing. If you go with the recommended mixture, the paint doesn't shoot well at all. I also found that while it laid down pretty well, it does require some of your time color sanding and buffing. It does lay down with some orange peel. I went with three coats in order to give myself some extra mils to sand through.

As for primer... I had the car media blasted, and the place that did that put on their own epoxy primer, so I'm not sure about the details of what they used.

Great info

Thanks Scott, Really good info as I'm considering painting mine in-house. I will probably have a friend with some experience help though- not quite that brave as to go completely "solo" on this one.

Cheers!
