Keeping old stuff

Is it worth it? Most, if not all of us, have some number of OEM pieces stashed around the shop/garage from when we upgraded that particular part. Examples are OEM shocks and sway bars, 4 speed transmissions, non LS differentials, etc. Is it worth keeping this stuff? I've tried selling a lot of it but the interest level on stock stuff is low, for obvious reasons.

I hate dumping it because it's so rare if not unwanted.....

So what to do with it? Keep it on the off chance the unique restorer needs an OEM original part? Or sell it to the junk guy.

I'm running out of storage space...

Years ago I had an extra block for my Bavaria. I could not give it away. I offered it free to many shops and they did not want it. I ended up dragging it on a cart to a scrap metal place down the street. AT least with my extra Corvair engine, I decided to bury it in the back yard. I dug it up when I moved ten years ago and now it is under my porch.

I keep everything if it is still servicable or rebuildable. For now that works OK because I have the space to be a pack rat. If you don't have the space to keep things you should offer it here for the cost of shipping.

Man if someone could collect enough of these "give away" parts you could build a free E9

I am sure Arde has an opinion about this!

I cant see parts ever getting MORE available. So if they cant be sold, then I think it would be great to put them on the Parts section as free. Eventually, someone will need a part that is NLA.

As an example, I'm looking for the EGR section that connects the two carbs together at the intake manifold. Neither Mesa Performance or CoupeKing have the part anymore since I appear to be one of the few that hasn't gone Motronic. They were all tossed away.

I hope the moderators and the list at large will not be offended if I promote my own solution to this problem.

This experience was part of the inspiration behind gearheadexchange.net I was frustrated by the ever growing stacks of boxes of parts in my shed, most of which I knew I'd never have a need for. I've been restoring old vehicles for most of my life and I knew that somewhere, someone could use these parts, and that they might even pay me decent money for them. But I'd rather give them to someone who needed them than throw them away. Both craigslist and eBay offer sub-par user experiences and you're often dealing with people that know little, if anything, about the parts or vehicles they fit.

The website is new and still in beta and it is entirely self-funded. I invite you and all e9ers to come join. It's free to list parts for sale, and there is no limit on how long you can leave them posted.

Sincerely,
TJ Noto

Hi David,

Thanks for joining our merry band of Gearheads.

The Alfa is currently in the capable hands of Shin Yoshikawa of Studio Time Capsule http://www.studiotimecapsule.com

The front end of the car had significant and thorough damage to it requiring a lot of bodywork. He is currently working on getting it straight, cutting out old damaged aluminum and welding in newly hand formed pieces. I suspect it will be a year before it's done. In the mean time I'm keeping myself busy playing with, and driving, the CSL

Just signed-up. Looks interesting.

How is the Alfa going ?

Ciao!

know the feeling, i couldn't give stuff away. perfectly good D'jet system, starter, block, pistons etc straight to the tip.

OK, now I feel sick. If you ever have anything else let me know, I really could have used the Djet parts.

Just did a search and found your post, that was just when I got my e9 so I probably wasn't looking for the parts then. Oh well, I'll keep my eyes open for the next clean out. Cheers.

i noticed you were wondering about rhd headers from motorsport downunder. i would suggest cash on delivery.

I know what you mean. I tried hard to buy a set and after 12 months of promises and excuses, nothing resulted. It was another 3 months before I got a refund.
When they finally sent me a photo of the headers they "developed" for the E9, it was obvious they wouldn't fit the RHD model.
I'm now looking at having a set custom made in the style of the RHD M88 manifold.
