Given how many of us like modifying these coupe for better drivability, how much value is lost if one changes the color of the exterior away from the original?. It would be done the right way including the inner door surfaces, trunk and engine compartment, all trim/glass/interior removed. Mine is Arctik Blau but I've always loved Taiga ... I'd change the interior to match as well (black or tobacco/tan).

It's your car paint it what you like. That white '75 CSi in Norwalk CT was originally Taiga.

Here is the N.A.D.A. color change appraisal table:

1) Well done color change to a better color -2%
2) Gratuitous color change with old paint visible in engine bay -15%
3) Poorly done re-spray to hide rust -20%
4) Well done repaint to a heinous color -30%
5) Well done repaint of stolen car shipped to Dubai -40%
6) Red interior - A.S.

option 6?

Option 6 sounds best.

Mario would do the color change so #1 would be the other choice.

If the car was a true survivor, low mileage, all original parts, matching numbers then a color change or paint of any sort would be a mistake. Other than that, a complete color change such that you would not know it was a color change (no overspray or other parts not painted) could only improve the value. If this is a VSR job, bare metal respray, engine out, it should be looking like it came from the factory in your chosen color.

It's your car, just make sure to do it right. If I ever go down to bare metal, mine is coming back Malaga. Sahara has grown on me, but it's still not my favorite.

Plus, many of the remaining vehicles have already been through a color change directed by previous owners. If the color change is done well, I doubt it would impact the value much.

My silver coupe went from green to silver by previous owner. Respray was a quality job. Repaint did not stop seller from getting a good price.

Thanks all,

Now the problem is VSR1's body shop is backed up ... I've heard its getting to be as long as a 2 year queue. That's the problem with good shops. Word gets out and they get too much business.

I’d say a complete & well done color change would only increase the value of a coupe but you’d have to pick a BMW color of the era, no custom metal-flakes, pearls or candy colors. While I like silver coupes I personally would keep away from metallic colors because you can’t touch up chips with a tiny brush……. well at least not very successfully anyway. ~ John Buchtenkirch
