Does anyone have one that's still hooked up?

Can someone describe the buzzer? What to look for?

Is it wired through the seat belt warning light as well ( for those that have the light on the dash) ?

Mine is still there but disconnected, the buzzer looks like a small version of the Hella can relay and is located on the steering wheel stalk near the beam switch. I can post a pic tonight if you'd like. I can check on the wiring too, my seatbelt wires are also disconnected under the seats by the PO and I haven't reconnected. The door buzzer screams like a banshee!

I had already removed the buzzer but took pics of the part and where it goes. The buzzer:

can it be an "american" option ? or a standard for USA market ?

i don´t have that, and i do not know anyone around here that has nothing similar (an e9 owner and friend lives in bilbao also, and we compare our cars searching for "differences"

by the way, my friend has an original BMW light torch in the small glovebox located in the left side of the steering wheel, the funny thing is that it is a rechargeable torch, and the support includes electrical connections

i don have a pic, but have you seen any of those ?

I think those came in '74 and beyond? I have seen them on early 5 series also.

Yes I'm pretty sure it was an 'American' requirement, trying to get people to fasten their seat belts. I think it started in 1972.

if you don't have the key buzzer, don't feel left out. They made the MOST annoying noise and I pulled mine very soon after I got my coupe back in '85. I seldom throw anything away, so it's lurking around here somewhere. Probably will bite my in the ankle or higher, some evening.

I have one of those things in my upper column, but I get no buzz. Wonder how one tests it. Guess I can test the wires with the door open and key in.

Yea, that jibes with my recollection of that era. The US DOT thought it would be a good idea to have buzzers wired to seat switches that detected human butt presence. As I recall, these were only mandated for a few years through the mid 1970's (which wasn't a great era what with 5 mph bumpers, smog requirements, and plaid suits). Most enthusiasts disconnected the *&^$%# things pretty quickly.

The funny thing is that modern cars have this same "feature" but with a soothing chime instead of an obnoxious buzzer. And we don't seem bothered by it. I guess chime technology wasn't available in 1972.
