Week before last my shop was broken into. The hooligans got into my key locker and stole all the keys, one of which was for my '74 CS, the only one I had. I pulled the door cylinder for the code and relayed the info to Carl N. (LaJolla Independent) He now awaits word from BMW to decide if they have jurisdiction to make the keys for a car registered in Canada. Apparently he had the same trouble for a customer in Mexico, and BMW decided they did not have jurisdiction. Carl was able to do a work around but it was a pain in the ass. The answer from BMW Canada...complete lock set shipped from Germany for $750. This is an option from Carl as well, but I was afraid to ask the price until other avenues are exhausted.
I guess what I am saying is to all...get duplicates of your key while in hand so you do not end up like me. The irony of course is that a)the car is nearly 40 yrs old for crissakes and b)anyone with a small amount of knowledge can pull the switch and fire the car with a screwdriver in minutes...so much for the overly complicated "security key"
Got ahead myself here venting frustration...the steering wheel lock. Bitch of a job this one. Now glad I am ready, all blind screws I replaced with standard cap screws when the intermediate piece of the ignition wore out. I just do not understand BMW's position on this deal.
