I changed the oil on my '73 Bavaria last night. It has the older style oil filter housing with the lower bolt.

I replaced the o ring, etc in the canister and installed a new gasket between the housing and block. I had a minor leak that seemed to be coming from the backside of the oil filter housing at the lower end (nearest the longer bolts).

Today, I took it apart, cleaned the mating surfaces, and installed a new OEM gasket. The leak is more now pronounced.

I didn't noticed any cracks, etc at the block or the housing itself. Any ideas? TIA!

That is why the top bolt is so much easier to work with. I had the gasket slip once and didn’t notice it until it spilled on my driveway.
Right! My next move is to change to a top bolt.

On the second reinstallation, I removed the battery and air cleaner for more room. I worked the housing into place with all 4 bolts through the housing and the gasket seated onto the bolts. I tried to reduce the chance of the gasket slipping off but it’s still likely.
