I have some seepage from the heater core that produces a slight (but noticeable) odor and fog on the windshield in cold weather. I've bypassed the heater for now - amazing how much heat is produced in the off position.

Before I dive in, is it possible to remove the heater to repair the core from the front by removing the whole console, gauges and glove box?

Are there any additives I can add to the antifreeze that will stop small leaks (that I won't regret) that anyone has tried? Had to ask that one.

Thanks,
Doug

To remove the heater box, the center console must be removed. The heater control console and heater box itself should be removed as a unit. Don't undo any control cables until after removing the whole. 2 bolts on each side of the heater console hold it to the underside of the parcel shelf. 4 nuts hold the heater box to the underside of the cowl pan. A lot of stuff stands between you and those 8 fasteners: console side panels, glove box, steering column lower cover, hoses, air ducts, wiring, etc. Some reference photos:http://www.vranedom.com/heaterbox/heaterbox.html

Thanks for the insights and photos which will be a great help. I'm happy not to remove the dash as part of this process.

Slight change of topic, but I've also noticed how much heat comes through when the heater is off. Has anyone installed a manual in-line cut off before the heater core? This would keep the hot water out of the core for summer use.
