leather...

Sorry I dont have the hide square ft/mtr number for you...But...be aware that automotive and residential leather/hides (Sofa, wing chair, etc...) are completely different. In the old days of Connally hides in Jags and Rolls and such, the leather was top grain, and had almost no "protection", but the tanning process with some pretty bad chemicals, and things like saddle soap with lanolin and oils was what you had with dyed pigments...Tan me hide when I've died, Clyde...

Automotive leather today is seldom top grain, and is a veneer of sorts, or splits as they are called, that are embossed and opaquely top coated with pigment to be tan, black, etc. Good news is that they are durable. Few cleaners will hurt them, few conditioners do anything to make them better.

If you say that your are shopping hides in SA, (thats the best place for it), but you either need to shop automotive (if your car will spend some time in the sun) leather/hides, or what you will get will not stand up to the UV with out protection. If your car will sit in your living room and you'll watch rugby on the tele, a waxy full anilyne-dyed top grain will be sublime...

Leather prices in the world have gone crazy, as (especially) SA beef farmers are not getting the money they expect, and thus less beef sold means less hides available on the market, and even a non-business major like me knows what that means...

I design residential furniture, especially upholstery and leather upholstery...I don't know everything, I just think that I do..that's what she says, anyway...

Good luck!

Warren,

i don't know the answer to your question ... but i do have a little advice.

1. you can't make this determination by a square meter formulation. the first thing it depends on is the size of the hide. hides range from 25 square feet to up to 70 square feet. the smaller hides are usually calf hides, and are also usually softer. the answer will be so many hides at xx? average size. hides are irregular shaped so it will take work to optimize the yield.

2. you will need to source leather that is suitable for automotive / aviation ... with an ability to withstand ultraviolet light without degradation of the finish.

3. there are many grades / finished of leather. lets start with how it is dyed. there are two primary types - aniline (color goes all the way thru the hide - much better) or topically applied ... which can wear off from seatbelt wear or other abrasion ... especially blue jeans or sweating.

4. the finish of the leather varies greatly, from natural to beeswax to many others. this is almost as complex as the tanning methods ... but only a few are applicable to automotive / aviation.

5. the cost of leather varies greatly. it is generally dependent on quality and/or its finishing method ... but sometime is affected by the marketing company. my point is cost is don't shop by price, shop by the right material.

there is plenty of good leather available in south america. i don't know the brands. there is an american brand that makes excellent product for the aviation industry - moore + giles from virginia. www. mooreandgiles.com

hope this helps

"Tan me hide when I've died, Clyde...." That's from "Tie Me Kangaroo Down." Australian, I believe. New Zealand gave us Crowded House, one of the best groups of the 80s-90s....

If I remember correctly from his web site, Paul Cain bought and tanned his own hides. You might send him a PM and ask how many hides it took.

You are correct about Crouded House but they started up from a few members of a group called Split Enz!!

Hi Guys thanks for the info, It is very common for restored cars down here to be retrimed with leather, and a couple of the local upholsteres have told me 12 to 16 Sq Meters (120-160 Sq Feet Approx) but at US $28 per Sq Meter I think the price is prety good!! I have tried to get onto Paul Caines Website www.38csi.com but it does not seem to be functioning anymore, Cheers Warren
