I was there. The Dekon Monza is a modified Chevy Monza, which they sold in the US in the late 70s. I have a feeling the race version had a big V8 in it, while the street car did not. It was very fast on the straights. But I think Henry had a slight off that may have allowed it to get ahead. He was leading the first few laps.

thanks for the info...

that thing (monza) doesn't quite look like it belongs out there to me.

My mistake, they did have a V8 option.

This wikipedia entry even has a section on the racing program, led by Al Holbert, so I guess they were the real deal in their day.

And they beat the CSLs of Stuck, Redman, etc back in the day as well. I had no idea they raced against the CSLs. So the battle I saw was historically correct.

The Dekon Monza was also driven by Chris Cord in the IMSA series. They were stumbling fast, but had major reliability problems. Sexy cars, and very LOUD!

There is a red one that is a regular around Laguna Seca.
Its awesome and crazy fast. When it is out there, the race usually becomes a race for 2nd.
