I always wondered why you see photos with license plates blurred on this site, ebay, etc. I imagine it is to avoid some kind of fraud but what I don't understand is we drive these cars with plates on all the time. If someone wanted to create fraud couldn't they achieve the same by just noting or photographing any car in a parking lot. Am I missing something obvious? :-|. Just curious.

Our paranoia level falls into three buckets, using Starbucks lingo:

Tall - People that are OK with sharing their personal and car identity.
Grande - OK sharing only one but don't want personal and car identities connected.
Venti - People that hide both their car and personal identity.

Blurring license plates allows Venti and Grande folks to stay in their categories.

The reasons for folks picking a bucket are another matter. Blumax proudly belongs to "Tall" and clearly does not lose sleep over identity theft. He may even encourage it :).
DeQuincey is a Venti, that fits very well the life and preaching of his moniker.
And then you have Gianni who may sleep under your car just to get a chance to capture your VIN number.

Hysterical! giani, a venti with a double shot of expresso!

Long ago, I once moved quite frequently for work. Each time reregistering my cars. Low and behold through the DMV, I would receive offers to purchase my cars. Unsolicited, unwanted, and annoying just as today with spam.

The second reason would be car thieves. Once the license number is known, it's a quick reference in public records to find it. I still disable my cars if I'm gone for long- rotor removal works.

So, the moral of the story is try your best not to show personal info more than warranted, but don't loose sleep over it.

Gianni is on his own personal quest for the holy (csl) grail. I wish him well and best of luck. He must be getting oh so close by now.

My town lists license plate numbers and the street address in a file on the town's WWW page. Blurring the license plate on pictures will slow down a bad guy for at least 90 seconds and keeps me in the Venti category.

Good info. By the way, what town is that?
