Back in the day with American cars you would jack the rear end up and turn a wheel. If the wheel on the other side turned in the same direction you had a posi-traction rear --- if it turned in the opposite direction you had a standard or so called open differential. I’m assuming BMW limited slip rears can be tested in the same way but am not sure ??? Thank you ~ John Buchtenkirch

Do you have a neighbor that you hate?

Pull up in front of his house and rev the old engine and then drop that clutch hard.
Now turn around and count the stripes.

Easy isn't it?

Been there, done that

Thanks Don, back in the day I used to live for that hole shot but after I accumulated several boxes of expen$$$ive broken parts I gave it up. I feel lucky to be alive today considering the amount I used to street race and even managed to survive a helicopter crash in Vietnam.

Seriously though I’d just like a way I can quickly test a third member in a junk yard or swap meet without pulling it apart. ~ John Buchtenkirch

Do it right and you will know-

You must hold one wheel stationary and try to turn the other at the same time.
They must both only go in one direction.

Just watching one wheel turn in the same direction is meaningless.
