Little help with cables?

Being in the process of putting my engine room back together I thought I would ask what a few cables / connectors are for since I am not 100% sure.

These come out from down below the air intake to the right of the radiator.
One of the single cables is for the hood light? The one that is taped over I have no idea.

These come out from the main harness below the brake oil canister and expansion tank.

Thanks,

I am sorry to say that I can not recognise those cables, but I feel that you are all alone by now, and I want to provide you with some help

the one for the hood light is easy to check with a multimeter, when you put on the headlights, it will show 12 volts

the other taped terminal, no idea, sorry, in that area you have only the hood lamp, the beam lights, the indicators and the horns, and another one let me think, is the cable for the temperature sender, also the electroventilator if you have one

the other picture in the vincinity of the brakefluid canister, you have:
-some cables to the starter (3 I guess, but one comes directly from the (+) battery and is very thick)
-one cable that is divided into 2 if you have carburetors, one to each carb
-other goes to the oil pressure sender,
-also you may have two cables to the brakefluid reservoir cap (if you have a warning for the brakefluid level)
- another cables are also arising that area if you have the orange squared check terminal in that area
and that is all

hope it helps,

I am not familiar with the right hand drive vehicles. I have some similar wiring that is mounted on top of the brake booster support arm (left hand drive). My green wires were from the ignition and fed the automatic chokes under, and the at the sides of, the carburetors. One of the black ring terminal connections could be to the starter motor? They do not seem long enough the reach the alternator? The only ring terminals I have are at the battery positive, alternator and starter (and some grounds - but these are usually brown).

Thanks guys, much appreciated.

Some quick comments first, it is a left hand drive CSi so no carburettors.

As for Pic 1 the hoodlight test is simple enough to make and since the other connector is taped over with old tape it is probably not in use but would be nice to know what it is for :)

The cables in Pic 2 are a bit short for the alternator and those I think I located anyway more towards the front so that bit should be OK. It is not for the brake fluid reservoir cap I know which those are. Could be for the starter though even if they are a tad short for that.

Problem is that I did not remove the engine and cables myself, the guy who it did at the shop turned ill and will back in a few weeks so I need to figure out how to put it together myself. Always easier to put something together that you took apart yourself.....

But I am sure I will manage without too much wiring being shorted out :)

Johan,
Is it a euro or US...
1) euro has slightly different light wiring than US so could be one harness not using all the wires up front such that a wire is tapped over.

2) I like deQuincey's idea.

Another way to at least try is use the wiring diagram wire color data to figure what goes to what. You can use process of elimination by looking at the wires plugged in to which device/light and their wire colors then cross them off of the diagram. Eventually, you could find the answer...a little time but not really that much.

Johan,

If you could point out the wire colors it would help. Some are easy, but some not so.

Pic.1.
car year?

a.) grey- Light on hood.
b.) Brown- aux. fan motor if you have a/c. Usually there are two one with a lug which gets screwed into the mounting relay. The one in the picture looks to be the one for the relay, post closest to the lights.
c. Sw/ purple + br/Sw- right front turning light. If I called the colors correctly.

Pic.2.

hard to tell the colors...

1.) Red- altenator.

hope this helps a little.

Thanks again, the car is a -74 Euro.

I will begin putting the engine back in on Monday and will then try and see where the cables might fit. Will keep you updated.

The engine is from a M535 -91 but these are cables that are from the original harness.
