Question: When I bought my car it only came with one key. The one key works the doors and ignition but not the trunk. Was there a second key that works the trunk? Or maybe my trunk lock is broken somehow.

Does anybody know of a source for a trunk lock and key (I would not want to change all locks...)?

Thank you.

You have the "Valet" key - search the threads here - there are various sources for the main key that works on all 3.

You may effectively have a "valet key", but that's not how your coupe left Munich. I don't think the concept of a valet key was around 38 years ago. At least it wasn't when my '70 was built.

My guess would be that the old trunk lock wore out, and was replaced with a part from another coupe. The owner at that time just accepted the idea of having different keys.

As Stevehouse suggests, seach the threads here for discussions of locksmiths who can re-key the unique locks that e9's use. It's too bad that the old trunk lock wasn't retained when latching the mechanism wore out - are you sure it isn't stored in the glovebox, beneath the trunk floor, or .... ?

Check out the manual here - there were 2 sets of 2 keys supplied - one that opens all the locks and one that doesnt open the trunk so you could leave all your valuables in the trunk while your car was in the shop  Is your key the one with the plastic handle or is it all metal? Usually the all metal one is the valet key if it is an original key. When I got my car I found a spare key under the original carpet so you may want to look around also!

Trunk lock

Maximillian sells new ones with keys.

A locksmith might get you there as others have reported. Pebra is the key/ lock type if I recall correctly.

A friendly dealer might be able to order you a new key with your vin number and perhaps a photo copy of your key both sides.

There are identifying numbers on the lock also..

Whoops, I stand corrected. Guess my '70 isn't very original - I got neither the valet key, nor the manual. Wow, I'm impressed that BMW had the idea of a valet key as long ago as '72.

I didn't know people stole in those days, the period ad pictures look so care free and innocent. Who knew shops could steal from their own customers back then...

Spoke to Keys4Classics about this problem and they indicated that the one key I do have is a Master key since it has 7 indentations, the Valet key would only have 6. Can anybody with both Valet and Master confirm this?
If this is the case I may have a replacement lock on the trunk (with no key...)

Thanks!

keyes

I have two sets of 2 keys. Each has 7 indentations

One marked I, presumably for Ignition, and T for trunk; perhaps replacements.

One- original with BMW logo, no marking for ignition but that's what it works, and another with a D stamped on it.

Maybe someone has an explanation since the dimples can be drilled or less.

Here are my keys - The master key (7 dimples) for all locks is the one on left with plastic on it, the valet key (6 dimples) that will not work the trunk is the all metal one. Both are made by Pebra and the valet key has a code stamped into the other side. Hope this helps solve the mystery - if these don't match yours then perhaps someone swapped the trunk lock at some point.

Thanks everybody for the help. It would appear I have an unmatched lock barrel on my trunk. I will either see if I can get a code off the barrel to order a new key, or order a combination barrel and key.

Cheers.

Dealer Keys

I ordered a Master key from Neillo BMW in Sacramento using my Valet key# and vin# and for 67.00$ they ship it to you.The guy's name is Rob if you interested 1-916-486-1011.:)

Some good advice. It looks like I found a locksmith who claims they can match the barrel to my key. Just need to remove the barrel and bring it in.

Thanks again.

I know this is not amazing to all but to me thinking you could order a key for a 37 year old car using a vin# and have it work is simply amazing! But maybe you can do the same on a Vette or Cadillac?
