... longer time BMW owner, but new member. I’m about to retire (unless I get bored and do something new), and want to take on a project for a car that was built “by me”, or at least to my specifications, for me.

I don’t have the mechanical skills (or even a garage at the moment) that I see here, so I’ll need to farm out the job to at least one shop. (More if I work as my own “general contractor,” as I have individual shops that I can go to for all parts of a rebuild.) It seems that many of the E9 Resto Specialists are in California, but I’d send the car out there to the right one. I’m also confident in the non-specialists that I have, but I want to bring them a car body that can be set right, and make sure that I have all of the pieces that are no longer available.

This’ll probably make some people angry, but I’m not looking to do an all original, concours type, restoration. I have a car that goes very fast, and I have a daily driver, so I want to build a car that has the beautiful aesthetics of an E9, with a drivetrain and suspension that’s a bit more modern. While this bar is likely way too high, I loved my E36 M3 that I had in ‘99 that had enough power to have a bit of fun, and was easy to toss around in the corners. I’m not looking for a red light racer, nor a track car, but something that has no problem keeping up with modern traffic. If I can push an E7 to that sort of feel, I’d be thrilled.

To make those who I’ve aggrieved feel better, I’m not looking to chop up a “nice” car, as that’d be a shame and also a waste to pay for work that I’m going to rework on, anyway. I forgot to mention that I need to add an automatic tranny, as I hurt my ankle and can’t row my own boat, anymore, so it’d be painful to chop around the tunnel on a car in good shape. I’ll do it if the only cars that I can find are in that shape, but it’s not my preference. Let someone else keep it original.

That said, any leads on a good car to begin with would be much appreciated. I missed a car on BaT a little while back which I think was bought by a new member, here. I’m willing to pay for the “right” car. Any suggested shops would be great, too. I’ve already gotten no response from a few shops (I won’t name them), so good ones would be appreciated.

That’s all I’ve got. Good to meet everyone.

Nothing against the shops on the west coast, but seeing you are on the east coast you could try VSR in New Hampshire:
http://www.vsr1.com/

or a bit further but still two-thirds closer than California is The Werk Shop in Illinois:
http://www.thewerkshop.com/

I am sure there are many others...
Good luck with your search and subsequent project.

Seth,

If I had to guess, only about 30% of the coupes on the site are original-like. I don’t think that you are going to catch mutch flak for desiring a modern drivetrain.
