Ideas? Thoughts?

Don, if you want a faceplate to fit the speaker hole, I created one with angled openings just for the VDO early series gauges. Here is a pic. The blacked out gauge is for AFR.

An opinion... gauges in matching veneered wood, in the speaker cavity, to match the implementation of the original 4 gauges would be the most harmonious.
Maybe not possible unless all wood is being redone.

Some thoughts:
The surface of the Alpina faceplate shows the structure of toothbrush painting
...very filigree work.
The faceplate should fit into the loudspeaker opening.
There will be the need to enlarge the cutout of the dashboard wood to allow inserting the gauges.
The faceplate should move a little bit forward by putting a thin layer of wood behind the faceplate.
There should be room for placing the backside gauge mounts.
This is a typical support of the loudspeaker veneer. With some modifications it could be the base of the plate for the gauges.

Great replies here from nice people. Thank you!

Going with the Hal Boyle 3D printed "Tilted" plate with vintage VDO gauges. And fitment suggestions from Tom!

here are some series 1 vdo gauges - new for a reasonable price. these are the 3 that i bought from this guy. i think the sweep style look better with the Alpina style cluster than the center style. be sure to get the correct senders from him too.

Question. Are the water and oil temperature sensors the same for all VDO model across the years of production?

Hal Boyle- He is the SOURCE!

We haven't offered them commercially yet but if there is enough demand we can certainly put them on our website: www.2002sonly.com. I'm currently experimenting with a wood grain filament that could be tinted to match the color of the rest of the dash

i actually think the Alpina cluster looks better sitting on top of the wood, than being recessed into it. when you try to recess it, you bring more things into play - having all sides sitting flush, having a uniform gap around all edges, etc. look at Steve's, that looks great.
