Hi all,

My auto transmission gear shifter is very loose when moving from park to reverse, and from reverse to gear. It engages each gear but when it clicks in place the shifter is still very loose. Does anyone know what I can do to stiffen the movement?

Is the housing loose or the shifter itself?
The housing is held by 4 bolts to the tunnel and the shifter itself is connected to a rod that connects to the transmission!

that shift lever is welded inside the big rubber seal inside the shift gate to the rod that becomes the linkage down below. The weld can fail and lead to this looseness or sloppiness when operating the shifter. It can only get worse if the weld has cracked. I expect you could disassemble and re-weld or find a spare and swap it out all in one operation.

Gee not sure. I’ll be taking it in to the mechanic next week to see if he can tell me.

It feels like the housing not the shifter itself

Right, 1 is for ZF3HP-20 autobox, other used in the Coupe, Bavs, Jaguar and certain others makes, the Borg Warner Type 65. Here are a couple photos of the 2. 1st is the former, 2nd is the BW65. Notice the rivet type attachment for the lever to a separate lighter piece of metal in the BW. Can break here. Let us know what you find. Mike
