Lurking on the internet....

Used to race a buddy of mine who had that same V'dub....running a '71 2002, it was a very close match....My first BMW was a '70 2002 bought in 1974 and the front fenders were already rusted out (Connecticut and salt) $900 and ran great until I broke a half shaft and had a close encounter with a large oak tree...totalled but the driver and passengers walked away
 
The first car I bought was a 71' 240-Z located in Montreal. It had fresh Silver paint and looked magnificent. I couldn't believe I owned it. I was very impressed that it had Black undercoating and told my older Brother how it had no rust!! I asked him "They can't hide rust can they?"

After replacing both frame rails within two years, I had my answer. Still was an amazing car for a youth and I'd love another one.
I'd bet that Scirocco was a total blast.
My first BMW was a totally rusted out Bavaria (Nothing hidden there) I bought for $200. I rebuilt it with a Pop rivet gun and fibreglass and put a $250 paint job on it. What a Blast it was. Was running GM bolt pattern stock car rims on it with Eagle GTs. Wish I was younger....again!
