Thinking about dropping an 88' M5 engine in the 73'??? Talked to a guy at Korman and he said something to the extent of M1 parts. I want to drop my 42 DCOE's on it for now, and later bring up the compression. Should get me around or slightly over 315HP??? What do you Ladies and Gentlemen think? What would be needed to do this conversion? Are M1 parts that hard to come by? I was thinking of an M1 distributor, (A double rowwed timing chain. He,he,he), and a special intake manifold, and voila! (Of course with some pulley and other small modifications)... What do you guys think? Everyone and anyone knowledgeable on this one... please.

Regards,

M-1 conversion plans 'n parts

first--Is your wallet really thick?
second--are you ready to freely part with contents
third--be prepared for extended search

fourth--before launching your search contact Carl Nelson aka BIMMER Doc for an honest and forthright response to your dream motor--get second opinion from Frank Fahey @ Frank Fahey Motorsports who is likely as experienced as anyone in this country with the motors and ancillaries for M-1, 5 and 6--he is now 20+ year owner of my former M-1

blumax aka former M-1 owner--had #199 of those built--52,000 fun seat miles logged from new in 1981 to about 5 years--when in 1986 it became necessary to part with it.

Not sure what good M88/3 (street M1) parts would do for your S38b35 ('88 US M5). The latter has the same bore, stroke and head as the former, but got compression reduced from 10.5:1 to 9.8:1, a log type exhaust manifold to cope with a cat, and Motronic instead of Kugelfischer injection. Even in its strangled for US emissions form, your S38b35 puts out 254hp compared to the M88/3's 277hp.

The later 3.6 liter S38 (S38b36) came with 10:1 compression and 315 hp or so. It also involved a different intake arrangement with an AFM and ram air induction. Is that what you're looking for?

However, Korman can modify your S38b35 something like this:

Be sure you're seated when they tell you how much. If you're looking for scary amounts of power, you might consider forced induction for your M30. It would be more powerful, less expensive and probably more reliable than the Motorsport stuff. These guys know what they're doing (click M30 under BMW turbo kits):

i was offered a low km s38 motor and gearbox (from a german m5) for an extremely good price last year. that coincided with a rust free shell on ebay. the mind boggled. but it took only about 2 hours of serious enquiries (i would be paying for the work) to go from "hey this fits pretty easily" to "this is an insane non realistic dream" (seam welding, brakes etc etc etc).
