How compatible are later model M30 Engine parts to our E9 M30 engines ?
I have the opportunity to buy an M30B30 from a '94 model 730i as described below ..

" BMW Engine M30B30. Very low K's (106,000), excellent condition.
Sell complete with starter motor, alternator, inlet with injectors, wiring loom, engine computer, p/s oil pump, air con compressor including all drive belts, MAF, Fuel/Air control valve and pipes, exhaust manifolds ... plus plus. hear running
."

My question's ...
Will the Fuel Injection system bolt directly on to my '74 (carbed) engine ?
Will the head bolt directly to mine ?
Are the Starter motor / alternator etc compatible ?

The asking price is $600 and I was thinking it would make a great spare motor/parts source for the future if the parts are compatible and i would like to do a FI conversion in the near(er!) future.

Lastly, seeing as I can hear it running, I would do a compression test at the same time. What would be considered good compression readings ?

any advice would be appreciated. :)

Sounds like a good deal for an easy conversion to FI for that original look. The E9 and M30 are both the same so parts swap is easy. Make sure you get everything you stated that comes with it. I'd even think about the fuel pumps, etc. Study the wiring and electrical parts; it should be basically plug and play, but expect a few glitches to work around.

Yes, you could swap over the head. I'd suggest you go throught it though and at least change the valve seals, etc.

Compression- higher the better, but fairly equal. Compare it to what yours is now. Good oil; no sludge.

Good luck. Happy picking!
