Warning! Engine porn ahead...

Electrification forces sale. I engaged @sfdon to help me put together this M30B35 for installation in my car but I have since been tempted to the dark (light?) side and am now going Tesla so I am putting this engine up for sale.

It was built for what I wanted -- a clean, reliable, serviceable, smooth running power plant that has vintage looks with (more) modern EFI. As such, we started with an M30B35 block and head from a 1991 535i. Both cores were super nice. The head was rebuilt by sfDon's guy, with a new "K" cam, values, guides, seats, seals. Very minimal surfacing was required and the machining "dimple" is almost entirely visible.

The block was sent to Mike at Engine Supply in Costa Mesa (the same shop used by @HB Chris) for disassembly, inspection, cleaning, honing, and assembly with new rings and rod and main bearings. I did not want loud forged pistons. The bores were very clean but to bring the piston wall clearance perfectly to spec we sent the original OEM cast pistons out for 1/1000th inch of Line-to-Line coating.

We sourced E12 intake parts for that CSi vintage appearance and sent all the aluminum parts out to Speedway Polishing (the same shop @HB Chris uses) for tumbling and clear ceramic coating. This is a much nicer looking and wearing finish than the usual clear powdercoat. The motor mount brackets also received black ceramic coating. All the bracketry and hardware is either new or zinc plated. The airbox was modified to clock and shorten the inlet and then it was sent to Embee Performance (again, @HB Chris 's shop) for blasting and powder coating in the original factory gray color.

@sfdon came out to my shop to install the cylinder head, new crank gear, timing chain, oil pump, etc.

A rebuilt air flow meter combine with the custom @sfdon wiring harness (completely labeled for easy installation), rebuilt throttle body with new TPS, all new sensors, and Motronic 1.3 ECU. Now the entire engine is together and ready for oil and break-in. To provide as complete a package as possible, I am including the exhaust manifolds and all belt-driven accessories from the original motor, including an almost new Sanden rotary A/C compressor, power steering pump, and alternator. I'm also including the original plug wires and tube in case you prefer the original round tube to the new flat one.

What you see above is what you get, plus the fuel rail and new fan which I forgot to photograph. See here for a complete album of photos during assembly. Parts not installed include the AFM, motor mounts, wiring, idle control valve, coil, etc. You'll need to pull the valve cover to pressurize the timing chain tensioner piston before start-up. To complete this installation you will need:
  • Electric fuel pump setup
  • Fuel injectors (Don says not to buy until ready to run as they don't fare well on the shelf)
  • Fuel pressure regulator (Don uses a Saab unit) and filter
  • 02 sensor and bung installed into your exhaust
  • Throttle linkage rod (the one on there is too short)
  • Hoses
  • Starter
  • Alternator (I'm not sure about condition of the old one)
  • Fluids
Continued in next post...

I have over $11,000 invested in this engine (as always, there are costs I failed to keep track of). I tried to include the itemized costs for what I spent (no shipping costs, taxes, etc are included) here in this post but it was > 10,000 characters so I can't. Instead, they are available here. This values my and Don's labor at $0/hour and does not include the cost of parts I already had. I am asking $11,000 for the complete package. I don't see how anyone could put together an engine of this quality for less.

The engine is ready for mounting to a pallet and crate for shipping, or local delivery or pick-up in the SoCal area. I can deliver it to a transport carrier hub in the Los Angeles area. You will need a forklift at the destination. Buyer pays shipping costs.

I like to see options for final decision. My 3.5 Turbo is almost done. Thanks for asking
