I attempted a search to answer this question, but could not seem to locate what I needed in an answer. Which engine, the m30b34 or m30b35 will be the least expensive to buy, and to install on a csi. When I have done, will plan on the 5 speed also. What will I need to pay someone to complete this conversion?
Thanks
Randy

I don't see there being much difference in install costs, they're both M30's. Both will accept all the same intake and exhaust options, and based on that will require the same accommodations for fitment. The b35 has different engine mounts in later years, so you may end up needing to fabricate mounts. It's no big deal.

The b35 specs at higher horsepower in stock form, has a more free-flowing intake track, and doesn't require the "Motronic" bellhousing and flywheel because it reads the crank position and engine speed off a 60-2 wheel on the front damper, so for a lot of people it's a more desirable engine for a swap, and prices reflect that.

I can't speak to costs, I do that stuff m'self, but maybe someone who has had a swap done by a shop can chime in.

I think the only realistic way to get your questions answered is to find a shop willing to do this kind of work.

If you are any where near Mike Robinson, he seems like a good one to start with. Sorry, I don't have contact info. I think he is in Chesapeake or Portsmouth.

I saw an M20-powered 2002 a few years ago and it was nicely done.

Hello
I am not trying to hijack this topic but I have a question about both engines. Which cars (model) E28, E34 , E24 ? and which years respectively hold which engine. Also how can I determine which engine it is I am looking at ,M30B34 or M30B35.

Strictly speaking

You're talking about buying a '80s BMW and parting it out, installing the engine and trans in your car.

Of course, there is no fixed price on buying such a 20-year old car, and similarly there's no set price for the dismantling of both cars and reinstallation into one car.

I got my 5-speed OD trans in a non-running '81 528i for $350 and did the work myself. YMMV, right?
