Hi All,
has anyone converted their manual front windows to power on an E9.....if so what problems do I need to overcome and what is the availabililty of the parts required to do so.
cheers..........Paul

What year of car do you have? What type of motors are mounted on your rear power windows - sardine 3-pole or plastic cover 2-pole? Depending on what you currently have - you will need slightly different types of:
- additional wiring from console to both doors,
- 2x additional buttons,
- 2x complete power windows mechanisms L&R with motors.

Mechanisms are pretty rare, but from time to time are on ebay - sardine type 3-pole Left or Right with motor in working condition cost around 300-350EUR/1pc. Newer type 2-pole with plastic cover are more rare.
New buttons 25-55 eur/1pc (price depend on type)
Used wiring is pretty rare to find - cost around 60-100 EUR. Wiring scheme for power windows is not very complicated, so i think can be made as custom by electrician, price i think will be something around 100EUR.

Example of pre 74' sardine motor type front power window mechanism

Hi Wladek....thank you for the helpful info. My car is 72 model. the rocker switches are already in the console (Power windows must have been an option) .
the rear windows are the sardine can type Part No 0 130 805 003.......their action is quiet quick ......it doesn't look exactly like your photo (may have been upgraded as I have heard rear windows are slow) The switch is as below.
I shall do some hunting down of conversion parts.
cheers......Paul

That switch is for later motors as it has pins instead of spade terminals. Coupes with manual front windows had a blocking plug inside the chrome trim for the window switch, not unplugged switches, someone added those. You can use either motor in your doors but you need to find the mechanisms first which appear to be a bit rare, someone here may have them though.

I think if you use sardine style motors the regulator should bolt right in. If you use e28 motors then mods are required to the regulator, search here for info, lots of articles. If you use mid 73 regulators then no mod is needed with e28 motors. Wiring depends on the motor type.

Thank you Chris..............question............the mechanism bolts straight in?? no modifications needed.??
cheers.............Paul
If you have sardine motors you will need Bosch switch as below.
So, for front you will need exact same mechanism L&R as was shown above - no mods will be needed with genuine parts all is plug'n'play.

The question is not how but why. Manual windows are lighter, faster, and never break.
I wish i had manual in mine.

this is what I like to hear....reasons I shouldn't go power. My main and only reason is I am LHD in a RHD country.....and it is a pain in the butt when you go into a parking station and get the ticket. I had a corvette before LHD and it was a nuisance.

Drive backwards into parking stations...

Maybe just try to find the late model regulators so you can use the better motors regardless if the rear is using sardines
