I am running pertronix in the distributor, for the spark. It's quite old, but I've not heard of any specific issues with this contactless system. You are of course correct about the play in the distributor shaft, and that rebuild project is one for this winter.
to tell the truth, I've never actually looked for the timing marks on the flywheel, as the timing mark on the front pulley is so much more accessible.
So, if I'm going to do this properly then, I am looking for "a sight-hole on the left hand side, below the starter motor", so that is accessed from underneath the car? I will need to take a look at this some more, sounds awkward if I'm honest, but I guess it must work
