Well here is my next restoration, a BMW 3.0 CSL, a car I have always liked and a car that is a joy to drive.
I was quite fortunate to acquire the car as it was by word of mouth and that it was only 3 miles away from where I live.
The car has not been driven for about 25 years and has been in storage all that time in a dusty barn, so it’s a true barn find!
The car is complete but some of the interior and a few bits of the engine have been taken to bits, as you can see from the photos.
The car is currently in a dark metallic blue, but the original colour is pale metallic blue – I believe its Fiord Blue
The car chassis number is right in the middle of the run and was registered in 1973, the number is 2285331
The boot bonnet and doors are Aluminium and it has the correct seats and steering wheel.
Engine number is the same as the chassis so it’s quite original, but the engine is sized, so a bit of work there!
The car has had a big spoiler put on, so I will investigate that and probably put it back to original.
All the bits that are off the car will be initially put back on so I know what if anything is missing, it mainly the interior that has been taken out.
It will have to go in storage for 12 months while I finish off my Jaguar XK150 OTS, but in that time I can start getting the bits to get on with the restoration.

Quite looking forward carefully taking it to bits and restoring it back to it full glory, and hopefully with being German Engineering it should be a joy to work on.
Like my other blogs, I hope this will help anyone embarking on a full restoration and give some good reference pictures.
If you see anything wrong, please tell me as I’m not perfect and would like any feedback……
I’m more used to old English cars in the 50s and 60s and Imperial spanner sizes – it’s a chance to dig out and dust off my unused metric sockets and spanners for a change!

Pictures are taken as it has come off the transporter, i had to wash it down before i went back to work just to see how bad it is...

she looks great! Is that the original paint?

I'd just pull the motor, clean up the engine compartment some, redo the interior, and call it a day if there's no rust showing through.

Survivors w/their original paint are worth $$$.

Wow! Send the Vin to BMW. They will give you the build date and original color. I haven't see a lot of fjord CSL's, so that would be cool. Baikal seems to look like fjord in the right lighting, so you never know (But BMW will).

Bon courage pour cette restauration d'une CSL .

Good luck for the restoration of a CSL.

No its colour is Pale blue - that is what is showing in side the Boot/Trunk

i do like the colour its in, but its going back how it came out of the factory.

Regards
Marc

I love the look of a just pulled out barn find!

Those rear arches look a bit funky.

It has the look of a great resto project with all the hard to get bits present and correct.

If the Jag drives you nuts the CSL will be therapy, kind of like the drug companies making us sick so they can charge us for a cure (if you subscribe to that theory) :)

It always blows my mind how cars like this end up in a barn and left to sit for so long. Great find, right under your nose. The original blue looks nice in the door panel, it does look like Fiord but hard to tell for sure. Headliner looks great too. The dash looks interesting with the RHD. Just not used to it like that. GLWB!

More pictures of bits

Last night I started putting all the bits that have been taken off over the years back on so I could find out what was missing and make a list of what I need – did not get round to the parts list!
There was a lot of stuff in the boot and so the first thing was to find out what I had....
Once I got my head round what was to do, I managed to get most of it back on the car, there are quite a few things that are broken, like the arm rests, and a few plastic bits...
Had a good poke around the body and the floors seem to be in good condition with the original sound proofing?
I would guess, as a minimum I will have to replace the all the sill sections apart from the inner one, and bottom of both the wings.
The boot floor looks quite good.
The car looks to have had quite a lot of filler on the back end, but looking from the inside of the boot wall they are not rusty or distorted and it seems like it’s been put the outside to make it smooth as the last owner did not want the rear bumper on.
I was quite surprised by the flexing of the roof when I gave it a clean off, I guess the thinner gauge really made a difference, and not a car you could jump on the roof and get away with.
Here are some more pictures…. Pre resto

The floors both drivers and pass, look to be in good condition as well as the inner sills... well that is until i strip the car

The material on your floors is not original, best to take a quick look underneath, it might be hiding some nasty rust.

Hi it's a rhd with city pack and these had options of the following

What is the City Package?
A City Package was offered as an option on all 3.0 CSL models and fitted to the majority of right-hand drive cars sold in the UK. Designed to make the 3.0 CSL more usable as a daily driver, it consisted of the following items:
-steel body panels (not included on all examples)
-power steering
-standard 3.0 CS/3.0 CSi chassis components (including anti-roll bars)
-standard 3.0 CS/3.0 CSi front and rear bumpers
-standard 3.0 CS/3.0 CSi windshield
-standard 3.0 CS/3.0 CSi side glass
-rear-window defroster
-chassis undercoating
-interior hood release
-additional sound deadening
-retractable rear side windows (power-operated)
-tool kit on inner trunk lid
-trunk lock
-velour carpeting

Mine has all this but alli bonnet doors and boot lid and loop pile carpets
So I think these are all options
Someone may be able to shine more light on this
The sound proofing looks factory fitted as it's sprayed the body colour
Regards
Marc

Interesting. I've never seen a RHD coupe so could be wrong but interiors weren't sprayed body color to my knowledge from coupes I've seen. The standard sound proofing wasn't that effective and is almost impossible to remove.
