Master Cylinder Leak

So finally was able to have the master cylinder and vacuum booster (rebuilt by White Post) reinstalled in my coupe. I day after getting the car back from my mechanic I noticed that the fluid level in the reservoir was low, and some wetness under the car. After inspecting the MC and VB, my mechanic noticed weeping from a small hole on the underside of the MC and is pretty sure this is the source of the leak. MC on its way back to White Post, but has anyone noticed this hole, or know what it might be for? Its not threaded...

Thanks.

So here's the MC w/ a shot of the tiny hole and the telltale sign of fluid eating away the finish. Any ideas why the hole is there? Is it part of some sort of pressure relief system? All comments appreciated.

It's called a "weep" hole. Water pumps have them and so do master cylinders and hydraulic boosters. They let you know your seals are bad.

Sorry; here's the image...

I guess its designed to prevent fluid from leaking into the booster? Bad seals on a newly rebuilt MC? I guess it can happen...

I also had mine rebuilt by them, not yet installed it. I'm curious to hear what they say and how they handle it.

Luis, so am I! Are they obligated to pay the additional shipping charge, not to mention the labor to remove/reinstall the MC and bleed the brakes?

Thanks guys.

That sucks that you have to take it back apart, as the master cylinder is a bit of a job to get in / out.

My advice would be, and if possible, to get a refund on the work, and buy a new one. Keep the fluid changed regularly, and it should last until you have to rebuild it yourself.

White Post will not cover labor or the cost of shipping the faulty part back to them, so I'm stuck with another "rebuilt" MC. Apparently it was a nick in the front seal.

I know, Chuck. Lesson learned, I suppose. Should have had my mechanic handle the rebuild...

Was told by WP that 20% of their rebuilds have to be redone! Kind of high when compared against their reputation, I think.

Do they not test them before shipping?
