in my searching I've come across some threads referring to MB door brakes. Can someone tell me what they are please.

There are probably 8-10 different posts about these, including identification of the MB models they were used on. Just put door brake in the search box on the upper right of the page.

Have them on both doors, and they work well. Note the need to use some type of 'bushing' on the pin that goes into the MB door brake 'hole'.

On 1974 and newer USA E9’s there is a side impact reinforcement in the door. The MB door brake still fits but with a slight interference fit with said impact beam. This prevents use of the plastic rain cover that normally covers the part of the brake within the door.
But it is still a viable alternate to the BMW brake.

Ive been offered some original door brakes so I think I might be set now. I've been inundated with advice and very grateful.
