Mechanical fuel pump issue

Replaced it a while back,worked fine.Now it’s not pulling fuel.
ive heard that trimming back the spacer between the pump and the head allows the piston to pump more
affectively. Question,how much do i trim it back?

If it is a recent pump I would check for fuel hose leaks at the tank sensor and in the engine compartment before shaving the spacer

If I recall there are a lot of stories out there about the pumps failing early.
