To what degree are different year parts interchangable on these cars? I'm looking for a clutch master and clutch slave cylinder for my '70 2800CS. I'm finding the master and slave only for years other than '70. Also, I see lots of parts listed for the 2800 but not for the 2800CS. Are 2800 parts going to be the same as CS parts?

Thanks
Max

When it comes to clutch an clutch actuation, the 2800 (E3) and 2800CS (E9) use identical parts for the same year.
But clutch, bellhousing and clutch actuation exist in two kinds for the E3 and the E9. Whit an external clutch slave cylinder or an internal clutch slave cylinder. The switch is somewhere in the 1973 model year.
The 2800CS was only built until 1971, so you allways woulds have had the ealier clutch (external slave). But who knows, what you have today? You may no longer have the first engine, clutch or gearbox, so you need to check. The 2800 (e3) was built from 1969 till 1977, so it comes in all shapes, sizes and vintages (not to mention conditions today...)

In short: As for clutch and clutch parts for your car: There are two kinds. find out which one you have and make sure whatever you buy fits...

I believe that the original pre-73 parts are on the car. To clarify, an internal slave clyinder has a rod that goes into the bellhousing, correct? The slave on my car attaches to something outside the bellhousing, so it would be the earlier external design.

Are the clutch master cylinders the same for the 2800CS and 3.0? I can't find one anywhere for the 2800CS.

Thanks for your help!

Clutch Slave

I always check with Mesa's website (www.mesaperformance.com) they know our cars inside and out. They list the slave as being the same for all 6's through `73 but it is $260. Ouch! Of course if you have upgraded to the 5 speed you won't have that problem. I bought the replacement clutch master from them and it works just fine but I did need to hit the firewall which has a slightly raised surround a bit with a piece of wood and a hammer which is not noticeable.

Exactly what I needed to know! I spoke with someone at Mesa and they were extremely helpful. I can't believe that I've never heard of them before as they have 944 parts too.

The person at Mesa said to consider changing the bellhousing to an updated one which would allow me to use the newer style (cheaper) slave. Has anyone done this/is it worth it?

Kudos to Mesa Performance

I have been doing business at Mesa Performance for around 30 years--
The brothers Spence--for E-9's and Jim for E-3, E-12, etc--are also a good source of difficult to find used parts--they know their stuff and are straight arrows--and everyone I know who has found them seems to share my affirmation.

Shameless but deserved plug--but as a satisfied customer that lives about 5 minutes from their store I will speak out when satisfied with the good help they have provided me in keeping my '02, Bavaria and Coupe in fine running condition.

Changing the bellhousing is only possible if you have a Getrag transmission. The 2800CSs came with ZF transmissions. If you have a Getrag (4 speed), the problem with changing the bellhousing is that clutch fork design is different. I just can't remember if it is possible or not to use the later design clutch fork. I'd also make sure you did not need a different throw-our bearing as well.

This is not an issue for the Getrag 5 speed conversions, as they use the later style clutch slave/fork/etc.
