There has been a lot of talk of steering wheels in the last few days. While on the topic, here's a stranger question: If someone were determined to MAKE a steering wheel, where would one go to get the inside-splined shaft that would be needed to hook up to the coupe's steering column? It seems to me that the easiest answer is that they should cannibalize an existing wheel that isn't a candidate for restoration, but maybe someone here knows a shortcut, like some kind of quick-release hub... Is there a more technical way to identify that spline pattern other than "course shaft from the E3, E9, E12...)?

Unless your buddy has a machine shop fabricating parts is painfully expensive.

The cheapest option by far would be to find a hub you need.

Next up would be to find an e12 wheel with a big honkin’ aluminum boss. Any machine shop could turn that down with a bridgeport or whatever.

The last option and most customized would be to use a CNC machine to cut the splines.
