So, Annabelle's motor mounts were shot when I acquired her, and with the tranny out and the car on jack stands, I thought "Hey, motor mounts are easy, let's do those too."

Yeah, well...

Here are pictures of my old mounts. Note that the threaded shaft running through the right side mount is not straight. It seems that this mount had been sitting on a pair of spacers, and that the bracket on the side of the engine rested on these spacers rather than on the rubber of the mount.

I was unable to get the mount out lifting the engine from below in the center, so I installed the left mount, moved the jack off center somewhat and lifted on the right side of the engine in order to get enough space to remove the mount. Because this is not lifting the engine straight up, I have somewhat moved the alignment of the holes. I was planning to slowly swing them back into alignment while gently dropping the engine, but I now am faced with the fact that the holes were not aligned when I started.

Thoughts on how to proceed?

Think you need to suspend from above if possible ... maybe give you a bit more stable and precise movement as you try to settle the lump back on to the new motor mounts.

Cherry picker plus load leveler going side to side vs front back.

Not sure man, but thats how I would go after it at this pt.

Thanks for the suggestion; that is exactly what I was thinking.

But then, whilst putting on the flywheel and clutch I decided that with the tranny off the engine, I should be able to move the engine about pretty readily. So, I dropped the engine back down onto the old motor mount, and put two jacks under the engine: one at the rear of the engine and another offset toward the right side. With the left side motor mount installed and loosely bolted, this allowed me to slowly move the engine in different directions and get the new motor mount installed.

Hadn't expected to find my engine balanced on top of a couple of spacers. Weird.

Motor Mounts.

Hi;
Just wondering if Bavaria motor mounts are the same. There is a set of brand new on craigslist.$45
Let me know and I will give you info on them.

Nice ... glad to hear you got it done. Trans off sure would make a difference. :)

Speaking off, you use the special tool to get the flywheel off? Wonder if there is a trick to get it off without the tool.

I just used a large screwdriver to hold flywheel by the teeth and got it off fine by myself while under the coupe.

I used an air wrench to remove the automatic flywheel. Spun right off. I had taken the fan off to tilt the engine while pulling off the automatic tranny, so I had been planning to brace the crankshaft using a wrench on the front and a pipe extended to the floor.

I used that setup to torque the manual flywheel.

Got it ... I have the engine out and these babies are in there tight. Bad form to hit them with an impact gun?

There are others here who are a lot more experienced, but I would think you could use an impact wrench to remove the bolts without the flywheel hold down tool.

You obviously cannot torque the new bolts that way, but I would think it would work for removal.

Hey Peter -- remember your comment about my motor mounts. Not only were they shot, the right side was not even resting on the rubber!

Why do we do this stuff?? Maybe we should start a list on a different thread :) Let me know if I can help remotely with anything-
