One of our esteemed members put together a rally for us which made its way through the California’s Central Coast. The rally is officially called The Khustenfahrt (The Coastal Drive); but we affectionately refer to it as “The Fahrts”. Chris picked some fantastic roads and we were amongst great cars and great friends!

This was my first big drive after completing a head replacement on the 2.8 and completely swapping in a refreshed front subframe with all new bushings and upgraded brakes.

This was my first year joining with my coupe. Chris chose a couple of fantastic routes. There was lots of great conversations, food and a fun wine tasting. I was great to see OCCoupe show up in his new project. He used his mechanical ability and well stocked trunk to help out several cars with minor issues assuring we had no DNFs. Here’s a few more pics.

What fun!

Pt. Sur lighthouse?

Can you (or @HB Chris ) post a map of the whole route?
Yes, Pt. Sur. Here is the Saturday morning drive, we did it with Targa California a couple of years ago, 156 miles (map is wrong). After lunch we took Vineyard 25 miles back to San Miguel and then to Paso for wine tasting at Thacher, one of my favorites. Friday was 46 to Santa Rosa Creek road to Cambria, Hwy 1 to Carmel Valley for lunch, CV Road to 101 and then G14 Jolon/Interlake Road to Paso.

Our middle daughter and her fam live in Cambria. We take 46 over the hill when visiting them. When we lived in the Bay Area, 2 of our kids went to Cal Poly SLO. We are quite familiar with the area. All beautiful and fun roads in the right car (like an E9) :)

I really miss living on the central coast. I grew up in MRY/SNS and went to school at CP. I had two choices to drive from home to school- HWY 101 or 1.
Back in the days of 55 speed limit, slogging through 101 between Paso Robles and San Ardo was... ugh... NOT fun.
So if I could - I would take the coast.

Either direction - If I could - I would leave SLO or MRY about 10PM and make a run for it. I'd get to the other end just about 2 hours later. I got to the point that when I took HWY 1, I would be within 15 minutes of the 101 drive time - Lets just say I had a blast. LOL - Then again, my tires lasted about 15,000 miles (Goodyear EURO NCT - back when I had the tii steel 13" wheels on the car). I miss those days...

I also worked one of the Big Sur fires in the mid 1980's and had to drive a 2000 gallon fuel delivery truck down from Salinas to the Big Sur ranger station to supply fuel to the CDF fire camp that was fighting the fire. I must have driven that route about 10 or 12 times a week - for three weeks.
Kind of different driving the big delivery truck vs the 2002. LOL TO this day (35 years later) I still know every turn on that road.
I am actually typing this from my brothers home adjacent to Laguna Seca off HWY 68... I may drive down Big Sur tomorrow... or Sunday before I head north to Seattle on Sunday. Ummm... Now you have me thinking. LOL

We really miss the central coast too. We are SF natives living on the east coast for 20 years now. Several times we have flown in to LAX and rented cars to go north stopping in SLO and taking highway 1 into Carmel from Cambria.

Looks like it was a fun drive and I am envious!
